\"Music is Art\" is the first solo songwriting release of composer Scott Lamps.
Acoustic guitar, violin, cello and Lamps\' voice make this album an intimate experience that draws attention to songwriting and subtlety - an intelligent and refreshing change from the overproduced and obtuse commercial pop that is all too common. Lamps\' characters fight the little battles of life with dignity and reserve.
Lamps is best known for his work as a composer and arranger of theatre and chamber music and as a record producer.
Lamps has worked as a producer, arranger and instrumentalist with such artists as The Compass Rose, Vanishing Kids, The Profits, Mike Droho, Christopher Quimbo, Emily White, Gage, Roster McCabe, Sol, We the Living, Cleft and Cloven, Mama Digdown\'s Brass Band, International Connection, Dan Venne and Mike Sullivan.
In His Own Words:
\"I wanted to get back to songwriting - to let the story and the performance carry the experience. I revel in the immediacy and simplicity of life, and I hope that comes through in my songs.\"

“Music is Art” features songs reminiscent of the days of the great singer-songwriters, a crowd that has all but vanished in the industry. The heart-felt vocal performances in “Reading Your Mind,” “Where Has Gone,” and “Last Love Song” give the songs a genuinely sincere feel. This continues in the melancholy “Days Gone By,” which tells the bittersweet tale of a man longing for a past love. “Circles,” the opening track, effectively articulates the struggles of a life without direction, while the ocean-like sway of “Singing” only amplifies the lyrical beauty of the story. Lamps’ fans will be happy to hear fresh versions of old favorites like “Lay My Head,” “Interstate People,” and “Same Old Song and Dance.” If there were to be one complaint, it would be the reworked version of “Last Time,” which is far from a disappointment. While the added vocals in the bridge add to the song’s depth, the driving Spanish-style guitar part of earlier versions is absent, leaving this reviewer slightly disappointed. That disappointment disappears as soon as the undeniably catchy “The Next To Break Your Heart” comes to mind—it’s just plain fun. After one listen, don’t be surprised to find yourself playing it on repeat.
From beginning to end, Lamps truly shines in his first solo effort, undoubtedly proving that music is art- and his is a masterpiece.
