"Only one in ten singer-songwriters currently performing is truly worthy of our attention. Scott Pryor is that one in ten and he shows it on his debut collection, "Suggestions for the Tailor". His guitar work demonstrates a range spanning the elegance of Nick Drake to the acoustic bash of the Violent Femmes. His melodic twists, lyrical content and stripped down production hint at everyone from The Beatles and Beck to Neil Young and Warren Zevon. Nonetheless the voice and tone are entirely Pryor's. His songs are immediate and heartfelt. He uses upbeat tempos to balance the heavier lyrics, and bits of percussion to balance the overall feel. "I asked for one small pocket to hold a record of my songs. It came to me in a pair of jeans. The record is my first after 16 years of writing songs. For this album I chose eleven from here and there about people and towns I've encountered over the past few years: a poet who picks tobacco by day and writes home to his lover at night; a fellow who keeps his most potent possession locked safely away in hopes that it will earn interest and one day he'll be able to afford the thing he wants most; a town that tries and tries to forget its past, but in doing so only remembers it more; a man overwhelmed by a shrinking world who wonders if the acquisition of a motorcycle might be just the thing; a town that sits in the shadow of an enormous volcano; a fine house made fine by virtue of its foundation on friction; and a handful of other stories, songs...
