Scott’s Garage is a four-piece power pop band from Richmond, VA that has just released their debut self-titled CD. Invoking the sounds of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Mathew Sweet, R.E.M., the Smithereens, as well as many others, the CD has been described by Absolute Powerpop as “one melodic delight after another”.
Formed by drummer Scott Baird in early 2007, the band includes bassist John Bollinger, vocalist and guitarist Gary Hankins, and multi-instrumentalist Greg Marrs. Each member is a veteran of the local Richmond music scene. Utilizing a one car garage (yes - that is how they got the name!), the band spent the better part of 2007 writing and recording the 13 tracks heard on their CD. Very much a group effort, the CD was engineered by both Scott and John who also contributed backing vocals (Scott) and keyboards (John). Gary served as chief songwriter and Greg added vocal and instrumental “sweeteners” to the tracks much like a modern day Brian Jones. The CD was mixed with the help of Bill Leverty of Firehouse fame. Recorded in the shadows of the Richmond National Battlefield Park, the CD “encapsulates the Southern Power pop sound: crunchy guitars, jangle, and more hooks than a meat locker” according to Absolute Powerpop who also ranks it as the fourth best of 1st quarter 2008 releases.
