Album Notes

Scrambled Ape brings you the power, joy, and levity of an all-brass band with speed, sophistication, humor, and humility. This quintet plays music by the late composer Raymond Scott, modern jazz standards, New Orleans brass band music, Eastern European music, German cabaret music, and original compositions. Fans of the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet will note similarities and Amy Denio was indeed an inspiration for the project.

The band consists of Michael Roderick on coronet and euphonium, Kee Zublin on tenor sax, Kelly Stats on baritone sax, Richard Johnson on clarinet and alto sax, and Jordan Glenn on drums. All are active Oegon musicians and participants in other Rocketboy Arts projects such as Mood Area 52 (Tango) and Maniscewitz (Mancini influenced jazz).

Scrambled Ape has shared bills with Sex Mob, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, and the Living DAylights. They play at Eugene's Sam Bond's Tavern on the third Monday of every month. Scrambled Ape is currently working on an original score for the Buster Keaton film The General which they hope to have finished by next spring.

A quirky roller coaster ride through alternative jazz!
author: Max E.

This is my kind of music. I love cartoons, and to see people playing not only Raymond Scott music, but quirky gyspy-jazz is just plain cool. Imagine animated characters picking up instruments while traveling on a peasents cart in Western Europe and you get the sound of this group. Unusual instrumentation evokes the offbeat nature of these compositions very well. An energetic listen if you're feeling really peppy or want to evoke some sort of vintage theme for yourself if writing or painting. Tracks that stood out include " Dinner Music for a Pack of Wild Cannibals" with it's wild drums, " Oil Gusher", " Misirlou", "Snake Women," " Voodoo," " Grandma Wash?" and " Soundtrack for an Unintentional Art Show", the latter two being my absolute favorites. If you like things with an animated quality, give these guys a shot!
