Album Notes

Shana Scudder's music career began at age two when she gave an impromptu Christmas concert in the lobby of her grandmother's apartment building. Not much has changed since then, although she did pick up the violin in second grade and toured the country and England with her youth orchestra. After graduating from high school, violin sadly fell by the wayside and, missing music terribly, Shana took up the guitar. She played her first open mic two years later in Brooklyn, New York and let's just say she gave a less-than-stellar performance. Ever the perfectionist, Shana was determined to improve on her humble beginnings, so after moving back down South, she began to do the rounds of open mics in the Roanoake, VA area and it was there that she first found out how vital a strong and supportive community of musicians can be to a young artist's development. From there, Shana started booking some gigs here and there, while finishing college. After graduation, Shana got more serious about music, began playing more shows, and in July of 2003, recorded her first full-length, self-titled album. The album was recorded in Wilmington, NC with legendary producer and engineer Karen Kane. It is a sparsely solo effort, with just Shana's intense voice and modest guitar accompaniment. Shana does so much with so little, however, and she will certainly draw you in with rich melodies and pictures painted of snapshots of life and all its intricacies, and she will leave you with a heart full and breaking and the promise that she is an artist who you will hear much, much more of.

Shana's first effort is a presage of what's to come. I recently heard her live in NYC (where she's returning to live) and Atlanta where they loved her. These songs are haunting and real. Her voice is seductive and entrancing and the guitar tunings are a perfect and melancholy support to her tales of love, loss and rebirth. We're sure to hear more from her and the new tunes I heard live are fantastic as well. Buy this now and be the first on your block to discover this fresh and talented new star in the making.

a quirky combination of Ani DiFranco and Azure Ray.

Less is definitely more. For some reason, Shana Scudder reminds me of a quirky combination of Ani DiFranco and Azure Ray. Listen closely. This ten-song, self-titled full length won't disappoint. Interestingly enough, Scudder's music career supposedly began at age two. She had given an impromptu Christmas concert in the lobby of her grandmother's apartment. She is also a quasi renaissance woman of the arts. She has been in the Lynchburg City Schools String Orchestra for ten years and was even a theater geek in such places as Virginia, North Carolina, and New York. For a solo artist, this album is very impressive. Her vocals are rich and passionate and don't require any backup vocals throughout her songs. It's just the listener, Shana, and her acoustic guitar. Her words are very simple, yet paint a picture of her life. Everyone who has their highs and lows in life should give this a try. You might have more in common with a girl from North Carolina than you might think. What's really nice about this album is how the acoustic parallels perfectly with her vocals. The instrument isn't so domineering, rather it's a nice balance; so it sounds modest. Standout tracks are 'A Song for Your Beauty and 'Time'. Shana has definitely come a long way. She has played several shows in North Carolina and had some stints in New York and Virginia. This is definitely not heavy listening; instead it's an album perfect for those lazy summer days.

I love this CD especially Gasoline Can Trophy and Rise From The Dead. Each track is rich and beautiful, a heartrending snapshot of a life fully lived. I'm looking forward to hearing more from this artist.

The songs on this cd are absolutely priceless. Her vocals and her guitar create this wave on which the lyrics triumphantly ride from the cd, thru your ears, down into your soul. At the same time the music does not boast of someone who is overly pretentious or needlessly melodramtic. Rather, a young woman, who is also an artist, who also enjoys playing music, who seems to be saying saying come and talk with me a bit! And I like that!
