Album Notes

This Sheffield based Latin Jazz band are fronted by internationally acclaimed vocalist Sally Doherty. As the title suggests this is their second album following on from their debut ‘Foolish Heart’.
With Piero Tucci on piano and accordion, Colin Elliot on double bass and Phil Johnson on drums; the playing is just excellent. Guest musicians on the album include Shez Sheridan on Spanish Guitar, Liz Hanks on Cello and Donald Grant on violin.
The songs slip effortlessly from gentle Ballads to Brazilian Bossa Nova and Samba, then from Swing to Mexican and Cuban Boleros with stunning performances throughout. Sally’s beautiful singing slides seamlessly between English, Portuguese and Spanish.
Her live work has involved performances as a guest vocalist with Peter King and Neil Yates and with Alan Barnes as well as opening for Cleo Laine and Alex Wilson. She performs in her quartet at venues and festivals around the UK.

"This new album of mainly Latin jazz from Sally Doherty features an inspired choice of material, an excellent band and faultless intonation and taste from Sally herself, sounding equally at home in Portugese, Spanish and English. All the tracks are superbly arranged and produced and the sound quality is exceptional. The singing is not only technically accomplished but very beautiful, and Sally manages to make these songs her own. This release will appeal to a wide spectrum of listeners well beyond the usual jazz fans." Alan Barnes

"Sally Doherty (is) a Sheffield singer transplanted (musically) to Latin America. She invests a bossa nova with deep feeling and girlish freshness, and has some of Stacey (Kent's) command of pitch, timing and general exquisiteness. But, as Nos e o Mar demonstrates, the chaps in the band can swing out too."

Alan Brownlee (Manchester Evening News)

As a singer songwriter she has worked with bands from other genres. Her works include six solo CDs of her own songs and folk songs which have been distributed worldwide, and the 2005 Latin Jazz release ‘Foolish Heart’ as well as singing and writing for Planet Funk who have enjoyed numerous top ten hits all over the world. With them she has performed extensively in Europe and Australia as well as on BBC Radio 1, MTV and Italian National TV and Radio. She has also recently sung with the Mercury music prize nominee Richard Hawley on his album ‘Lady’s Bridge’.

Second Time Around

This is another really beautiful CD from Sally Doherty and her brilliant musicians. Her voice moves from gentle romantic to strong swing, and there's a powerful emotional drive throughout. The Very Thought of You and Second Time Around are really moving, beautiful tracks. My favourite, though, of all of them, is Noche de Ronda. It's an amazing track - listen to that haunting fiddle!

A Gem

I've loved Sally's music since "Sleepy Memory" her 2nd solo record. I have to say that "Second Time Around" is among her finest, possibly outshining her first venture into the realm of Latin Jazz "Foolish Heart" ! If you are a Bossa Nova enthusiast or just love great music in general, this is one is well worth a listen (or several listens). Check out the audio samples !
