Paul Seaforth is a rising star in the pantheon of outstanding jazz trumpeter-vocalists, and this album puts him squarely on that track. Warm romantic vocals ala Chet Baker, trumpet ala Satchmo meets Sweets Edison. "When Did You Leave Heaven?" is both modern and traditional, straight-ahead and sophisticated, yet soulfully relaxed. Every track a delight, with gems throughout. A few of many highlights...
Opening with the cool groove of "Dedicated to You" and a warm vocal by Seaforth. Veteran guitarist Peter Sprague takes the first of many fine solos. ~ "Green Dolphin Street" provides the setting for Seaforth's engaging scat singing and rich jazz trumpet sound, backed by the energetic rhythm section. ~ Seaforth then shares some "Kindness" -a sweet'n'soulful, groove tune by David Wilcox. ~ Ellington's "I Didn't Know" has Seaforth's fine singing with a muted trumpet solo ala Ellington trumpeter/vocalist Ray Nance. Bassist Kevin Axt's fine solo could have been inspired by saxman Ben Webster. ~ "When Did You Leave Heaven?"--the album's title track is a classic from the preeminent vocalist-trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. Simply terrific, showing Paul's ability to turn tribute into his own triumphant vehicle. Rich, soulful vocals and trumpet. ~ "You'd Be Nice" begins with hip Dixieland style comping from Sprague, soon followed by another of his lyrical guitar solos. ~ "Tonight's a Night for Love" is a thoroughly romantic ballad, featuring Paul's beautifully soaring voice. ~ On "Caravan," the only all-instrumental track, Seaforth plays a Dizzy-esk muted trumpet over Sprague's cool guitar interplay. Bassist Axt takes a fine solo chorus; vamping out over Cataldo's exotic groove. ~~~~
"My One and Only Love"...this track is so right on, Seaforth should consider a full album of "ballads" like this! Pure, expressive vocals. Magnusson take a beautifully lyrical bass solo. Sprague's guitar accompaniment is marvelous. PERFECT! ~ "Like Someone In Love" is a warm, medium tempo tune with Paul sounding a bit like Kenny Rankin. ~ "You're Nearer" the Rodgers and Hart ballad is a beautiful closer. ~~~~ If you enjoy romantic jazz vocals, this album is a must-have delight and a keeper.
