A very complex piece of work
CDBaby calls this modern folk/filk but I can't really agree; Seanan is going her own separate way and pretty much defies conventional labeling. For example, she recently admitted that she's very fond of country music and now I can clearly see it's influence in her music but I consider it to be much richer and more interesting than most modern country.

Her use of instruments in her music, for example, is much more complex than is typical for folk or filk and is growing more so with each album. The topics of her songs are remarkably diverse ranging from the silly to the profound and back again as the mood takes her.

I've never seen anything like her and wouldn't be particularly surprised if I never do again. Hopefully this remarkably prolific science fiction/fantasy author can find some time to create a few more albums before she's done.

P.S. - I recently used her song "River Lies" from the "Pretty Little Dead Girl" album in a role-playing game that pretty nearly blew the players minds when they finally figured it out. Jack's Place is going to show up in a modern urban fantasy game very soon and I expect the players to be delighted (when they recover from the shock).

This is the GOOD stuff!

Heard Seanan at Renovation and bought this CD - I'll have it memorized soon...
Every song has at least one brilliant diamond-sharp line in it; some of them (Wicked Girls, for instance) glide effortlessly from one brilliant line to another. I love poetry, with lines freighted with layers of meaning, and hate doggerel; this is poetry. I've ordered 4 copies, to give to women I know who *need* these songs... The lost-love songs are evocative and cathartic without moaning or self-pity, which is quite a balancing act.
Then there's the technical virtuosity. The diction is all clear, and everyone's voices land pure and true on their notes. There's no sliding or scooping, and to top it all, they make it all sound effortless. My only regret at this point is that 2 of her albums are apparently out of print and unobtainable, at least through cdbaby...

Inspiring
This is probably the best money I've spent on music in the last decade. I completely agree with the previous review also. Great harmonies. Wonderful music. And I love minor chords. This album sends chills down my spine.

Keep up the great work.

I love this CD so much I wore it out!
I'm entirely serious with the subject, there. I've had to make a backup CD copy (yes, I did ask Seanan if I could before I did!) because the original disc is so worn out from overplaying - already - that it's skipping all over the place.

Brilliant album. The lyrics are catchy, poetic, smart and often very escapist, and the music itself is glorious. I love Seanan's vocal style - full of attitude - and Vixy's backing vocals are a perfect complement to it. You'll want to listen to this one over and over. I'm even planning to cover a song from it at my next open mic event...!

Wow.
This is beautiful, high-quality music. I love the imagery and storytelling in every song. It's wonderful.
