Album Notes

As an elementary schoolteacher turned 2-time, national poetry slam champion, any given day may now find Sekou Andrews, previously known as Sekou (tha misfit), presenting an original piece for international marketing executives, giving a keynote speech at a healthcare conference, or performing passionate poems for Barack Obama in Oprah’s backyard and Hillary Clinton in Quincy Jones’ living room. Sekou’s dynamic spoken word has been featured on such diverse media outlets as ABC, MSNBC, HBO, Showtime, MTV and BET. He has performed privately for such prominent individuals as Maya Angelou, Norman Lear, P-Diddy, and Coretta Scott King, and has shared the stage with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Jill Scott, Maroon 5, John Legend, Robin Williams, Carlos Santana, and the Black Eyed Peas.

Sekou is also an accomplished actor, voice-over artist, songwriter, and music producer who just completed a lead role in the independent film “The Sea of Dreams,” and whose two independent CD releases have earned him an impressive array of national music awards. His collection of Just Plain Folks awards, including Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Spoken Word Album, Best Hip-Hop Album, and Best Producer, have made him the most awarded artist in the largest independent music organization in the nation.

Working with creative partner Steve Connell Sekou has created two successful shows- “No Easy Choices,” which thrilled crowds at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO and “The Word Begins”, which enjoyed critical acclaim, sold-out shows and 3 Helen Hayes Award nominations for its 9 week premiere run in Washington DC. The duo has delighted sold out crowds at countless other high profile events such as the Pasadena Pops Orchestra summer series, the Marian Anderson Awards and the 2009 Inaugural Peace Ball.

In his latest enterprise, Sekou represents the cutting edge of event speaking as a Motivational Poet & Strategic Storyteller who is inspiring the business world with “The Sekou Effect.” He has mastered the art and business of creating original, customized spoken word presentations that electrify the messages of such global corporations and non-profits as Kraft Foods, Kaiser Permanente, Nike, Medco, Time Warner, eBay, General Mills, Paypal, Microsoft, ACLU, Global Green, Wieden+Kennedy, NBA, the NCAA to name but a few. He has now emerged as an engaging voice for healthcare, routinely evoking tears, cheers, and standing ovations at various cutting edge conferences, including Health 2.0, TEDMED, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Forum, Health Media ENGAGE, SCHA Patient Safety Symposium, Big Task Weekend, and Medco Symposium.

Embodying innovation and inspiration, Sekou (tha misfit) Andrews does more than inspire you with his story; he inspires you with your story.
