AWARDS:
CLEO nominated finalist in Cape Town's Barleycorn Music Club's 2003 Song Competition.
This occurred during the recording of THE BEAST WITHIN and was based on an unmastered copy of track 10, CLEO (Dan's Version) with a live performance following the initial entry. It was the 1st time I'd had to do that falsetto live. I had hoped they would choose DREAMCHAIN instead! Anyway, I'm glad. Everyone seems to like CLEO whenever I've played it since then and I would probably never have added it to my live sets if I hadn't been "forced" to play it live that night.
ANGELICA GOES TO #1!!!
In May 2005 the unlikely hit song Angelica , Track 9 of "THE BEAST WITHIN" , reached #1 on a top ten recommended list on European podcast THE NEXT BIG THING.
This song, with lyrics by poet Mark Meyer, is an obscure, light ditty which has been picked up and played by more radio and cyber stations than the more obvious "hits". One never knows which songs will take on a life of their own. (And Meyer still refuses to explain the poem to me.)
BURDSONG nominated "the lovesong of the decade" as judged by lovers around the world. (Private Joke).

BIOGRAPHY:
Born and raised in South Africa and travelling the globe now for over 15 years, I finally managed to stop in one place long enough to record my 1st album "THE BEAST WITHIN" in Fishhoek , Cape Town late 2003. Mastered and manufactured in Vancouver , Canada , the album was officially and globally released September 2004.
With over 20 years of songwriting this tip of the iceberg represents the 1st unleashing of my beast within. This album is made up of an eclectic mix of songstyles with some of the earliest tunes mixed up with the new.
Being a gypsy for a lot of years many of the songs seem have become popular at my regular low key appearances around the world. The Hibiscus Coast (see www.southernexplorer.co.za) , Plett , Cape Town; all in South Africa; and Vancouver , Nelson , Northern Vancouver Island and Kitimat in the Wild Northwest of British Columbia have been my regular stomping grounds. More recently Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland, all on vancouver Island, have born the brunt of my stomping. A few of my songs (HEAVY RAIN , DREAMCHAIN , BURDSONG , SAME GAME) have been covered by artists in some of these places (Aden Hinds {http://www.myspace.com/adensounds} Johannesburg , Sean Germond - Cape Town , Barbie Meyer - Margate).
I enjoyed a long and fruitful development period through the 90's playing as a duo with accomplished cellist Christie Staudhammer, initially touring beaches , forests , houses & lakes about Northern Vancouver Island and later the coffeehouses of Vancouver City. We also played around Plettenberg Bay South Africa towards the end of the last Millenium. Sadly , no formal recordings of those years exist , BUT*******SEE END!! IT'S HERE!!!
In late 1996/7 I joined bandmembers Liz Adams , Scott Blackley (Muzzy Pep, The Great Dividing Range {http://www.myspace.com/thegreatdividingrange}) and Patrick Singh in the Whitehorse-based Yukon altpoprock band "HOOP" as bassist for their tour of the East Coast of Australia in early 1997. In mid 1997 we all hitch-hiked off in different directions. Luckily no blood had yet been spilled and all was good.
2004 saw me collaborating with songwriter/slide guitarist Malachi Greenidge in the duo Holy Joe & The sKeptiK. (http://www.myspace.com/malachigreenidge).
Since Malachi moved back to Ontario I've been concentrating on my solo performance, playing venues on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver when I'm in Canada and off shift, and migrating annually to the Kwazulu-Natal south coast in South Africa each year for the surf season and an intense music experience.
Mostly I have been writing and jamming with any inspiring talent I intercept in my wanderings to the abovementioned locales.
The last 10 years have seen me splitting my time between the southern tip of Africa (music & surfing) and the Canadian West Coast (music , snowboarding and , most unfortunately , work). The next album is on the way!! I promise!
In the meantime:

Cool and quirky. Power-pop to beautiful love-songs. Trippy club to metal ballads. Well-fused and a good listen end-to-end. Plus a hidden gem that startles you awake if you drifted off with the tranquility of the last song.

The Greatest Hits of.......

1st album? This is more like a greatest hits album. In the right hands any of these songs could be huge. And there's plenty more where these came from. I saw this guy live recently while travelling through South Africa. He was jamming his songs unrehearsed with a bunch of locals. 4 HOURS of original material!! So relaxed and natural. And a great party all the way. Those people love this guy! (I bought his cd at the gig-sorry CDBaby!)
