Senopia were born out of frustration: Formed in 2009 - when the UK's music scene was entrenched in the dying days of the Landfill Indie years, and the country gripped in the start of the post-credit crunch years - and seeking a grander vision away from the status quo, Senopia ventured online and met through forums and musicians' ad listings to spell out their musical outlook - to not settle on one style, to play with energy, and to mix the past, present and future in their music. They searched far and wide, and settled on their current line-up with members from England, Austria and Finland.
Senopia encapsulate, in turn, and at once, glitchy electronica, soaring melodies, hypnotic rhythms, grungy guitars, euphoric pop, and beats-led trip-hop, taking in alternative rock, soul and jazz along the way.
Their debut LP, Modern Squalor, mixed by Donald Clark (Muse/Guns N' Roses/Noah and the Whale) and mastered by Mandy Purnell (Bjork/The XX/Sigur Ros), is the culmination of their work so far, dealing with issues of life, death, love, greed, austerity - and Earth-destroying supermassive blackholes. It's nothing if not ambitious.
