Composer's Notes:
"The Eroded Man", at the time of the September 11th attacks, was a long- and slow-developing MIDI studio project. It had begun as a result of a personal experience that, until that time, had seemed earth-shaking but quickly proved to be trivial in light of those truly earth-shaking events; but the emotional content seemed somehow to click perfectly into place for this project. I was lucky enough to break the collaborative ice when, in an online exchange, Hiro offered to track the alto flute part -- which brought an organic quality that had been sorely lacking, and began opening conceptual doors. The song, along with another that had been written the morning of the attacks (while listening to and watching the news coverage) -- "Bipolar Requiem" -- were submitted to the September Rising project, and while both survived to be on the "long list" of accepted submissions, "The Eroded Man" was clearly the most appropriate choice. After the selection process was completed, a number of musicians contributed performances, comments and criticisms, and encouragement. Of these performances only Frank's and Elmar's contributions (and of course Blake's mix engineering) survived in the finished recording, but the piece is very much a work of many minds and hands.

On September 9 I went to lower Manhattan to see the flamenco movie "Vengo" at a theater on Varick St., just below Canal St.--a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. It was a beautiful, peaceful night and I walked around the neighborhood before and after the movie. Looking back I feel like I was almost saying goodbye to this part of NYC that I love so much. "Vengo" means vengeance or revenge and this is part of what I felt as well as a tremendous sadness. When I picked up my guitar to write something for the project this flamenco/blues inspired piece is what came out.

Manhattan Elegy is a new arrangement and performance of a solo piano tune originally called A Prairie Lament written in 1998 for my solo CD, The Old Iowa Waltz - Piano Solos. The original impulse for the tune was the farm crisis in the Midwest in the 1980's. Many of the problems from that time remain in the farm economy today, so the tune still feels current to me. I had always wanted to orchestrate the tune, so, when the tragedy of September 11 (sadly, also my wedding anniversary) occured, it seemed like a good time to create the arrangement and record it while the shock of that day was still very new. When the fine people of the MOTU-Mac list spontaneously decided to create the project that became the Blue Dove CD, I submitted the renamed tune in it's new form.
