Album Notes

Starting from the Fall of 2007, the Bicycle Songcycle was created as part-senior project / part-homage to Sufjan Stevens’ “Come on Feel the Illinoise” (which was transcribed and arranged by the conductor Dave Amrein and me, Angie Ma, and performed by our college’s orchestra and choir the prior semester). It is a concept album, or song cycle, about the historical, social, and personal wonders of bicycles. Musically, I decided to draw inspiration from the old-timey cabaret styles of the late 19th/early 20th century (known as the Golden Age of Cycling).

Almost all the songs stemmed from compositional obstructions given to me by my professor Dave Amrein. All instruments are played by my dear friends and me, and recording was divided between Lake Forest College, the Chateau, and Heaven Gallery.

Sewing Pattern is a band out of Chicago which is (from what I can tell) the solo project of Angie Ma, who also plays with indie orchestral pop band Canasta. Taking inspiration from Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois project, and “originally created as a senior thesis project, this album weaves through songs saluting the history of bicycles and lost love”. So that concept grabbed me immediately, as elaborate chamber pop & bicycles are two of my favorite things. What’s more, the album is a great mix of twee, baroque pop that calls to mind everything from Van Dyke Parks and Margot Guryan to Belle & Sebastian to (natch) Sufjan Stevens. Really fun stuff that I can’t wait to dig into more and absorb the songs.
