Album Notes

The San Francisco Saxophone Quartet was founded by David Schrader in 1977, primarily as a rehearsal group to play classical works for saxophone. By 1978 the group was accepting engagements in clubs and restaurants and eventually, street performances. Gradually they became a symbol of musical San Francisco, notably being asked to perform on cable car rides in 1982 the day before the famous system was shut down for two years of necessary repairs, and again in 1984 on the day the cable cars began running again. From 1989 to 1999 the Quartet was heard regularly at Post and Grant Streets, delighting tourists and residents alike.

Apparently, Sax invented the saxophone to add string-like tone colours to military bands. Listening to the grunts and shrieks that sometimes characterize the Jazz sound, this can be difficult to believe. But Adolphe would be proud of these guys. I plan to buy the other two discs; and can we have the Goldbergs some time, please?

Ahh, a string quartet interpreting Bach. Wait! No! Those are saxophones? Don’t let your ears be fooled. Aside from the occasional harpsichord accompaniment, it is four masterful saxophonists who are performing these beautiful baroque classics. After 30 years of playing together in clubs, restaurants, on the street and in trolley cars, it is no wonder they’ve been able to blend their individual timbres into such an exquisitely symbiotic sound.
