Apparently, Sax invented the saxophone to add string-like tone colours to military bands. Listening to the grunts and shrieks that sometimes characterize the Jazz sound, this can be difficult to believe. But Adolphe would be proud of these guys. I plan to buy the other two discs; and can we have the Goldbergs some time, please?

Ahh, a string quartet interpreting Bach. Wait! No! Those are saxophones? Don’t let your ears be fooled. Aside from the occasional harpsichord accompaniment, it is four masterful saxophonists who are performing these beautiful baroque classics. After 30 years of playing together in clubs, restaurants, on the street and in trolley cars, it is no wonder they’ve been able to blend their individual timbres into such an exquisitely symbiotic sound.
