Quinn W. Shagbark crawled out from under a rock somewhere in the Midwest and has bounced in and out of the public eye over the past five years, recording a series of irresistably twisted albums that belie their modest and low-budget origins. Intelligently delusional and twisted, Shagbark's songs inhabit a universe of their own creation where nothing goes according to plan but the final thread never quite snaps.
More Shit from the Bogus Captain marks a shift in gears from 2002's "Propane Summer." The same trademark confusion and rambling are here, but the sound is more raw and precarious. Thematically, much of what we've come to know and fear about Quinn remain: small town pathos, big city confusion, latent psychosis, and angry nostalgia all work their way into these songs about spilt milk, crime spree love affairs, illegal masonic barbecues, and the quintessential house that's falling down. Fortunately, the newer, fuller sound of "More Shit" is no less weird and compelling than the full-on freak show of Quinn's early work.
