Vocalist Shahida Nurullah is a Detroit native who comes from an artistic family and has trained with the best jazz musicians the Motor City has to offer: Teddy Harris Jr., Marcus Belgrave, Kenn Cox, Marion Hayden and Yusef Lateef. As a member of Geri Allen's band, Open on All Sides, her vocal styling bowled Europe over when she toured Germany, France, Finland and Holland. The New York Times lauded her performance with Allen at the New York's Knitting Factory and she received the 1994 Spirit of Detroit Award.
Shahida has a particular fondness for Brazilian tunes, but her repertoire runs the gamut of jazz and blues. Her far-ranging musical talents have been praised by Steve Bryant of the Michigan Chronicle: "When she sings she has the ability to integrate her voice with the instrumentals so that she becomes another instrument herself."

The voice on this CD is the voice of an angel. Absolutely fabulous. I don't understand why this is not a national best seller. I have many requests for more songs. I have my own list, of course. Extraordinary.

The Consummate ARTIST

April 16, 2007 One week beyond my magical birthdate, I found the beauty of an album which I wish that I could send to you. Although I have the capacity of copying the disc, the artistry demands that one purchase as many copies as one could afford and send it to friends as gift. This album was an unexpected gift which I finally opened last night in "the wee small hours of the night" and listened with the depth of my soul which Nurullah Shahida touched in her album, "The Ruby and the Pearl". As it was a gift I do not know where to purchase it, but will share with you the information given on the inner cover: www.shahidanurullah.com e-mail: shahida@shahidanurullah.com Although each piece is exquisite, I think the title number and "Send in the Clowns" are almost beyond belief!
