Yes. The Same Shai. Best Known for their 1993 triple-platinum, If I Ever Fall In Love, the men of Shai: Darnell Van Rensalier, Erik Willis, Garfield Bright and Marc Gay are set to emerge with same force and respect they commanded in their freshman effort.
In a time when grass roots (soul) music seemed to be slipping away to the constant theft of samples and remakes, Shai emerged onto the music scene with a soulful sound felt by men and women alike. After being discouraged and denied deals by some of the biggest labels in the industry, Shai took matters into their own hands and asked a DJ at a local Washington, DC radio station to play the now infamous track,"If I Ever Fall In Love" a capella. In the first hour, the station received so many calls, it was added into the regular rotation by the next week. Within weeks Shai had a number ONE single under their belt with no record company pushing their product. This would soon change as the same labels once uninterested to their original style of music, came knocking and knocking hard. Each was eager to sign them and cash in on their overnight success. three weeks and a whirlwind of flights and meetings later, four talented Howard students living in the dorms went from hanging on the yard, to hanging with Arsenio Hall and the likes of Hollywood. Representing New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, and Miami, each member still claims Washington, DC as their 'honorary' home and WPGC as their foundation for
To no one's surprise, Shai faced the challenge with ease and took the whole world on a harmonic journey. Their debut album, If I Ever Fall In Love, forged their signature a capella song and boasted four top ten hits including the
album's title, Comforter, Baby I'm Yours, and Together Forever . Their triple-platinum success encouraged the release of a live project, Right Back At'Cha, featuring the bonus a capella remix ofYours. Their second project entitled Blackface also proved to be vintage Shai. With two top 10 hits including Come With Me and I Don't Want To Be Alone followed by the hip-hop remix featuring
Jay-Z, Shai was sought after for producing, writing, and vocal collaborations. Beverly Hills Cop III, enjoyed a taste of Shai's success when they released Place Where You Belong from the movie soundtrack which achieved Top 10 chart status as well. Features and writing credits also include such notable jazz artists Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton and Boney James.
In addition to the many charity efforts made by Shai over the past 10 years including the Make A Wish Foundation, the group is poised to set up an independent effort, Project S.T.A.R. (Students Tracking And Recording) to work
in conjunction with various school districts around the country catering to students eager to learn the technical ins and outs of the music industry. Shai will provide a full recording studio featuring the latest technology and equipment for students who maintain a B average. The semester will include live instrument recording and studio time as well as classroom instruction with special guest speakers including the industry's top engineers, programmers, producers, celebrity groups and entertainers. Garfield Bright says "...this opportunity will expose students to the various sides of the recording industry which really move the market and separates the fame seekers from the true workers and lovers of the art of music. Basically, it's our youthful experiences that shape
the destiny of our adult lives. this can truly make a difference and offer a chance for teens to begin learning industry so they can make a viable contribution."
With their fourth project found here Back From The Mystery System........ you can be sure this too will be a momentous year and another exciting ride as Shai freely climbs the charts once again..........
