Album Notes
The aims of any artistic pursuit should be twofold. Firstly, to translate the artist’s inner thoughts and feelings into some kind of personal statement, and secondly to share that journey with an audience. On his new album ‘Dark Things’ Melbourne based blues rock guitarist ... achieves all that and more.
(Australian Musician Magazine April 2009)

I say great album too! Gave it a spin on my way home from a gig last night mate. Impressive stuff. Lyrically engaging and knitted together with very creative and original audio sounds ... amazing guitar work too. You have certainly wrung the full gamut from your instrument - from beautiful to hideous, from gentle & inviting to violent and threatening - and all points in between. The solo that closes track 4 is a killer! I love hearing original sounds Shannon and this disc has it in bucket loads.Well done sir!

Onwards and upwards
Shannon Bourne's second cd shows an artist who is not afraid to curb his curiousity or throw the odd curve ball.

Most artists dread the second cd as fans expect more of the first cd. Well nothing stays the same in this mean old world.

This cd is more hard edged than his first cd "Burn It Down", it also is more experimental both in lyrics and texture.

Shannon mixes heavy drums & basslines, moody piano, skittering percussion, backwards looping, various guitar effects and gentle acoustic picking into his overall sound.

"Machines" mixes these together and I admit it can be tough to listen to.

The influence of Tom Waits is heard on "Everything to me" but Tom never fired off a guitar solo like the ending of "Baling Dry #1".

"Bailing Dry #2" is a return to the blues which mixes Delta Blues and hints of Richard Thompson and is a lovely outro to the cd.

"Till the fall" splits the album and is very very catchy.

"Sweet whiskey" is a rocker with a great riff and reminds me of sharing whiskey with Shannon in a certain Irish bar in Melbourne.

"Charcoal skies" "Cotton Dress" and "Solitary" are acoustic tunes which show how Shannon's voice, lyric writing and guitar playing have changed since his debut cd in 2005.

As I said earlier on this aint "Burn It Down" part 2.

But if you enjoy challenging music that keeps you guessing and showcases a talented singer/guitarist following his muse then buy this cd.

Then catch him live and see how he performs tunes from this cd with just an acoustic.
