Album Notes

"Five Deadly Venoms" is Shaolin Death Squad's third release. The album's namesake is a 5 piece song-cylce, which is based off of the 1978 Shaw Brothers kung-fu classic movie. It is a story of skilled students and masters, the story of money and murder, the story of bad and good, greed and revenge. Initially, the Five Deadly Venoms was only to reference the song cycle, but turned out to shape the overall theme of the album even though the remaining six tunes were not directly related.

"With its very visual music, FDV has some aspects of the kitsch action film’s original soundtrack. But don’t be mistaken: we are in the presence of a great album, deliciously hybrid, with a well-maintained personality. Lao Tseu said: “You must find the path.” SDS has definitely found theirs"
--Review from Progressia.net, written by Jean-Philippe Haas, Feb 2010

“Five Deadly Venoms” showcases some of the best music that progressive metal has to offer. Every note is performed with all the elegance and precision of a Shaolin warrior. It’s a great album for fans and newcomers alike. "

This is Shaolin's best album to date. It has the musicianship of Intelligent Design and the "catchyness" and focus of their first album. The theme of the album plays like a kung fu movie with a plethora of interesting characters appearing at the beginning to halfway through the album. These characters are the Five Deadly Venoms and this is their stories told from the eyewitness accounts of Shaolin Death Squad. Highlights are the tension building "Centipide", the frenzied and brilliant "Lizard" with a breakdown so groovy and otherworldy that you will repeat it several times, the epic "Last Stand", and the suprisingly soulful "Farewell".
