With lyrics like "I'm talking trouble from the start / Guess I'll catch you when I can / Superman", Shari Pine wails on her latest single, "Superman." This New Yorker isn't the first to hearken back to the bygone, less-is-more days of Stax Soul with its deep and steady pockets and mantra like rhythm sections - she's just phenomenal at it. In her paradise, soaring and joyful Aretha -esque vocals (and smart phrasing) punctuated by Tower of Power horn blats (Richie Cannata of Billy Joel's camp is on horns), ride the waves of a Hammond Leslie to the finish line. If "Honey dropped the bomb/ She had a load of Kryptonite" implies the trump card in a bet of a lifetime, Shari Pine is going to hit pay dirt. ~John Scandoni
