notes

With a sweet, soaring voice, catchy hooks and thoughtful, emotionally-charged lyrics, singer/songwriter Sharon Edry(now performing as Sharon Goldman, www.sharongoldmanmusic.com) has only just begun to make her mark on the New York City music scene. Her sophisticated brand of acoustic pop is steadily garnering a following of listeners eager for the lyrical substance and strong musicianship they miss on commerical radio. In the spirit of songwriters like Natalie Merchant and Lucy Kaplansky, Sharon is most comfortable in that fruitful territory where folk and pop intertwine.

A long-time NYC resident and Long Island native, Sharon grew up as a suburban kid in love with ballet, books and Billy Joel. Today, she pours her passion into songwriting, yielding intelligent, melodic and bittersweet songs of love, rejection, identity and independence in the city she loves best.

"Sharon displays a honesty and originality in all of her songs...touching on a spectrum of emotions."
--Eric Cohen, music director, WAER Radio, Syracuse, New York

""There's a plethora of young women doing the acoustic singer-songwriter thing at the moment. Sharon separates from the crowd because of the lovely qualities of her voice ... purity, simplicity, directness, 100% presence. No big histrionics, vocal gymnastics, or the sound of a throat damaged by a jagged bourbon bottle. She knows that well-written songs can survive intact without the help of a triage nurse."
-- Eddie O'Strange, Town & Country Radio Show, New Zealand

"This is a very good collection of top-class songs that deserve your attention. Each of Sharon's tracks on Semi Broken Heart is ideally suited as a showcase for this talented lady. One of my favourite tracks is 'Stained Glass Window.' The word picture is perfect and you will be entranced to find how the story evolves. The performance is simple and spare for the most part and it suits the song to perfection. "

  • Reassuring songs about changing relationships

Great songs about changing relationships and the scarey but sometimes necessary step of moving forward with your life. Great vocals.

  • it's beautiful folp.

"folp" being folk/pop. or "polk." whatever you call it - it's good. i will admit that i may be slightly biased in reviewing sharon's cd. i won't lie - she's a friend of mine. but i don't write reviews for all of my friends. sharon definitely has that... something. i'm a songwriter myself, and i think sharon has mastered what i believe to be the single-most difficult aspect of songwriting: the hook. her songs are simple yet smart, clean yet interesting, and catchy and straightforward. her voice and guitar work have all those same qualities. but the hooks are what get me. listen to this cd once, and i promise you will get something from it stuck in your head.

  • sad songs/happy music

Clearly Sharon Edry's been through a break up recently. If not, she's great at imagining it or recalling an old parting. But the album isn't necessarily a downer. The songs have an upbeat feel to them. Sort of a disconnect with the lyrics. But it works. Her voice is as strong, clear and lovely as ever. She's also got a knack for writing melodies that hook without being trite. Edry really has a way with words. She draws pictures with them that really get you to visualize exactly what she means. What a talent. This is a great pop/folk recording. (click link above for full review)

  • Talking is what love is all about? Indeed!
    author: Dave Luv

Producer extraordinaire Carolann Solebello knows that Sharon’s angelic voice needs to be heard! I love how all the music surrounds but never overtakes Sharon’s ethereal vocals. The CD gets better as it goes along; with highlights being the ballad Uncertainty (featuring my favorite line; Talking is what love is all about), and the strong hooks and melody of the forthcoming hit, Stained Glass Window (the latter also features the creative and haunting keys of special guest Pianist Ari Scott!). I hear parts of Lisa Loeb, parts of Shaun Colvin and a few others, but you should listen to the CD and form your own opinion. If you don’t like the CD, well, then your opinion is just wrong. I can’t wait to see her perform live! Dave Luv -Former Executive Director of The NYC Folk Music Collective

  • A great new voice!
    author: David Ebenbach

This CD is a wonderful find. I heard Edry perform and was struck by her powerful and subtle voice -- in it you can hear shades of Nancy Griffith and Natalie Merchant -- along with her earnest, well-written explorations of love and loss and hope. The CD does what so many recordings fail to do -- it captures the intimate beauty of that live performance.
