Simmons hails from New York where he cut his artistic teeth performing spoken word on stages alongside then up-and-comers like poet Saul Williams, rapper Mos Def, and actor Wood Harris who starred in Remember the Titans. His writing career has spanned more than a decade, wowing audiences with prophetic poetry about real-life experiences, political insight and musical ability.
Today, Simmons is a breakout star in his own right, having performed his special blend of poetry and music across the world, from Bessemer to Brooklyn to Berlin. An Emmy-award winning musician, Simmons was celebrated for his collaborative work on the soundtrack of the documentary film, “Thornton Dial Has Something to Say.” He has also appeared on “Russell Simmons Presents HBO's DEF POETRY JAM” and had a role in the movie Panther.
American Music is a collaboration between Birmingham based musicians (Carlos Pino, Jesse Suttle, Caldwell Mackin, Oteil Burbridge) and producer Jeff Lasecki. The sound is a unique blend of influences, ranging from traditional poets like Gil Scott Herron and The Last Poets, to the funk rock sounds of the Allman Brothers, Parliament Funkadelic and Rage against the Machine.
