Album Notes

Performing contemporary folk in cafes and clubs for over seven years, Shawn Cummings creates music that has depth and heart. His songs offer a wide range of emotional tones, from the angst of life's buffetting currents ("This River") to the all out joy of a small boy turning a neighborhood into a world of adventure ("Five").

Shawn is inspired by several contemporary songwriters. John Gorka's music encouraged him to pick a theme and explore it to create fresh perspectives. The songs of Buddy Mondlock opened the doors of form and demonstrated just how finely crafted a song can be. Also influenced by Cheryl Wheeler, David Wilcox, and Ellis Paul, Shawn has learned from these writers while avoiding imitation and finding a voice of his own.

His new CD "Wish" features eight originals, and two works by other writers (including one by John Gorka). Recording this project allowed him to explore his songs in new ways, allowing each piece to dictate its accompaniments. In some songs he adds only violin or bass to his own singing and guitar playing. Other songs are fully produced with drums, bass, and lead guitar. Viewed together, the songs offer broad perspective on life's journey. This CD is visceral, introspective, and intuitive, and deserves close listening.
