The CD "Shawn Kelley Trio Live at the Living Room" was
recorded one night in August of 2007. It features the
trio in a live setting in front of an enthusiastic and
appreciative audience. The purpose of the recording
was to capture what the trio does best; interact
musically with each other and with the audience. When
you listen to the CD you will hear the music just as
the musicians played it; live with no overdubs or
electronic effects. The drum sound is warm and
natural, you can feel and hear the wood of the drums
and the richness of the cymbals. The beautiful
acoustic qualities of the piano and bass combined with
the natural resonance of the Living Room at the
Sheraton Grande in Bangkok make the recording stand
out as an example of what jazz musicians strive for
and jazz fans love; real music played by real people.
Shawn who is from Syracuse, New York, and Taurey who
is from East Orange, New Jersey, have been playing
together in venues throughout Asia for the past 8
years. They teamed up with Thailands' virtuoso bassist
Therdsak Wongvichien earlier this year. Fans of the
trio have been anxiously awaiting their first CD
release.
Featured on the CD are 9 jazz classics which have been
arranged in a way that lets each musician shine in his
own right, as well as contribute to a tight trio
sound. The CD features an uptempo version of "Take
Five"" that has pianist Taurey Butler taking a
ferocious solo, followed by Shawn Kelleys' dynamic and
adventurous drum solo. On the other end of the
spectrum in a tender version of "I thought about You"
which is dedicated to the memory of bassist Eldee
Young, who Shawn and Taurey played with for many
years. Other highlights are a New Orleans classic,
"Whoopin' Blues", an impressive arrangement by Taurey
Butler of "Summertime" and a highly swingin' version
of "C Jam Blues"
Fans of jazz music that swings hard, that is played
with passion by dedicated musicians, and that is
played live with no holds barred will be thrilled by
this CD.
