SHED began in fall of 2002 in St. Louis, MO. Throughout college Adam and Phil fronted their own bands, the illtet and The Junk Unit, respectively. Nonetheless, the two found themselves playing together all the time in other settings including in the University run Jazz combo program. After the illtet disovled over the summer of 2002, Adam and Phil joined forces, and with the help of Jay, another Univeristy combo player, SHED was formed. SHED uses the standard jazz trio format to explore near-eastern, and americana musical forms, as well as a dose of good ol' Rock-n-Roll.

The trio wasted no time in playing out, and within a few months found themselves sharing the stage with The Slip, Shanti Groove, Drums & Tuba, Zach Brock, Dead Cat Bounce, and others. Odd metered forms juxaposed with pop-structured melodies gives the music both an edge and familiarity at once.

In the spring of 2003, SHED released Speeds Up Slightly and recieved great reviews, often being compared to The Slip, Marc Ribot, and Tortoise.
