I was unsure about telling the full story behind this record. It was a very heavy process in many ways, inspired by an emotional awakening that began following an early divorce at 22 and a series of shifts and transformations that occurred thereafter. The songs seemed to write themselves. But without realizing it, the actual making of this album became a two year project filled with endless opportunities to grow through grief, questioning, and emotional exploration.
In all honesty, I think I had become unconsciously dependent on the success of this album. I was trying to replace a gaping hole in my heart, and even music wasn't going to do that job. I'm sure I was hell to work with for a while. I battled a constant struggle for satisfaction I could never get, and my ears would hear different things depending on the day. With the album in hand - finally ready to be heard - I can truly see how it has been the most incredible gift to my healing... and to my growth. I can listen to it now and hear its beauty.
Getting Warmer was written in the final months of our two year project. I wrote it when every part of my being was finally ready to let go of the attachments I had clung to - when I was no longer needing outside validation or approval for what I had gone through. I felt a freedom for the first time, and you can hear it in that song if you listen.
Get Out Alive was the song I chose to record first. I wanted it to set the tone for the rest of the album. Essentially, it's a song about waking up and becoming conscious. No longer living under the layers of pain and emotional impressions that burden us. It's about shedding all the expectations we put on ourselves that diminish our vitality. It's definitely a spiritual expression of some sort.
