notes

A Shelby non-Bio:

Shelby was formed in the spring of 2000 by NYC locals Kenny Cummings and Phil Schuster. Their first few get-togethers were very casual (and included Chris Kavanaugh, former drummer of Big Audio Dynamite). They wrote and recorded their Songs | 8 cd in the summer of 2000 and have been playing around NYC since then. The CD has already drawn considerable praise and interest - the music has been described as New Order vs. The Who, with a little My Bloody Valentine on the side - and will be officially released in July 2001 on the notorious Merc Records label.

Shelby is:

Kenny Cummings sings and plays guitar and keyboards for Shelby. He fronted Little Shining Man from 1993 to 1998, and previously played and programmed synthesizers for acts as diverse as Elvis Costello and Midnight Oil.

Phil Schuster plays bass and keyboards for Shelby. He played bass for Stigmata a Go-Go from 1993 to 1997, and has also played with Toshak Highway (formerly Swervedriver), and Sophia (formerly God Machine).

Chad Wilson plays drums and sings for Shelby. He moved to NYC, in 1999, from Columbia, South Carolina. What could we possibly say about Chad that hasn't already been said?

PAGING SHELBY RIGHT NOW FOR SUCCESS!!!!

  • DO YOURSELVES A FAVOUR

I first heard ‘Songs 8’ at a friend’s place in New York and immediately said ‘who’s this’. It’s one of those rare CD’s that demands your attention and it just gets better each time you hear it. The ethereal blend of soaring guitar and vocals over the pumping bass undertones on ‘Home’ makes my hairs stand on ends. Back in London and I find myself humming ‘Golden Boy’ in an elevator. Shelby is certainly not a derivative band but, having said that, if you like Muse then you’ll love this. Back to New York and I manage to catch Shelby live. Kenny Cummings’ vocals and pure energy lift every song to newer heights. Phil Schuster’s power-bass sets the tone for an energy-driven set of blissfully executed songs and punctuates Chad Wilson’s great drum lines (though it’s Dan Paternostro’s drumming you hear on the CD). Tonight we’re treated to an enchanting violin/second guitar (courtesy of Claudia Chopek)and this turns out to be a superlative gig. This demonstrative New York combo didn’t let their CD down but rather surpassed all expectations. Back in London the iPod Shuffle selects ‘Home’ and again I get chills and a friend walks in and says ‘who’s this’. 8 more, please.

Dynamic and heartfelt, Songs|8 is an amazing CD. All of the songs are well-written and absolutely beautiful. A great addition to any CD collection . . .

  • Great and original!

This cd rocks, just flat out. The songs are inviting, original, and driven. Think early Radiohead meets Smashing Pumpkins and then beats Billy Corgan up for whining to much. The album is well crafted, flows nicely, and I really LOVE the last track. A great ending to a great cd! Good job guys!

Holy canoli! The sound quality of the CD deserves 5-stars in itself! It's like New Order meets The Who with a touch of My Bloody Valentine. With some REALLY well-written songs and some gnarly effects, you've got a great power poppy emo record like Tug Boat Annie. Oh. I'm melting. Listen to it loud.

  • Guitar driven goodness

Excellent new sound. The hooks are deep and the music is easy to sing along to. But not in that hokey Incubus way. The songs are well produced and arranged.

  • for Smashing Pumpkin fans
    author: Kasee

I'd recommend this for those who miss The Smashing Pumpkins, not because Shelby sounds like them but rather comes from a similar vein of inspiration.

  • I wish it were more than 8!

This is a great find and I can't wait to hear them live! This is a band, a sound, a pulse that is unstoppable and you don't want it to end...especially after just 8 tracks! I will gladly share with others and brag that I discovered these guys long before they were signed and considered a house-hold name. I hear echoes of Joy Division among others that really hold your attention and make you move. As another reviewer mentioned..."this CD follows me everywhere". I dare you to listen to this CD and not be tempted to see how loud you can play this music...it begs you to really blast this stuff and make sure everyone around you hears this great new music! I can't wait for the new album!

  • Sheer guitar bliss and damn good melodies
    author: Julieta

This cd has followed me from home stereo to car to work since I got it. Guitars and melodies blast and race and rage down a gorgeous highway of sound. 5am ache in the vocals. Buy this if you have ears.

  • Great CD. Awesome new sound. Love all 8 songs
    author: Patrick

I heard Golden Boy on XM radio, and had to find the CD. All of the songs are very good, and I especially like 1,2,4, and 8. That list will probably change as I listen to them more, but it is definitely the best find I've had in a while.

  • 8 good songs
    author: Josh

Every track is a toe-tapper. Shelby is the best band I've discovered in a while.

  • Solid from start to finish!

This is one of the top CD's I have listened to in a while. Very good from beginning to end.
