Shelley Doty Bio
"...the complete performer in her use of cranked up emotions in her singing, edgy rock energy and swinging jazz guitar rhythms."
Labeled "a future legend" by one reviewer and a "guitar goddess" by another, Shelley Doty is considered one the best independent performers in the business. Watching her perform is awe-inspiring due to her masterful guitar licks, soulful voice and charismatic stage presence. As a songwriter, she creates articulate songs for today by sprinkling them with respect for the music of her youth (rock, R&B, jazz, funk). Shelley sings with passion and plays with an authentic raw energy that cuts through the air with jubilant imagination and freshness.
Shelley's CD "Possible Reasons for My Insomnia" was released in July of 1999 in conjunction with her appearance at the Lilith Fair. Shelley won over 800 artists who submitted songs as part of a talent search contest. In addition to her own set, she played lead guitar for the final number with Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, Sarah McLachlan and Bonnie Raitt. "Insomnia" is in it's third pressing and has received critical acclaim for "it's rich, jazzy vocals and seriously funky guitar." Her brand new CD "Over The Line" is now out and available via CD Baby.
In addition to fronting her band, the Shelley Doty X-tet, Shelley also often performs solo acoustic. Shelley's first CD "Opportunity" (1997) is an acoustic EP that showcases her gentle side. When Shelley plays electric guitar she rips into it like no other woman ever has - she has a swagger and confidence to play lead guitar that is as rare as it is electrifying. But she also has the subtly and tenderness to cause an audience to shiver at the elegance of her voice and insightful lyrics. Don't be fooled though - she can bring the same intensity she's known for when playing electric to an acoustic setting.
Shelley grew up in the hills of Berkeley and is still based in the SF Bay Area where she's a local favorite in both the acoustic and electric scenes. She has jammed onstage with the magnificent Taj Majal, and shared a bill with the likes of No Doubt, Train, and Blues Traveler. She's toured nationally, playing at intimate concert halls, music festivals and large ampitheaters. Shelley is currently featured on the cover of the Fall edition of Acoustic Guitar Magazine yearly stand alone issue - Play Guitar. She also has a 2 page spread with photos in the current Spring issue of ROCKRGRL Magazine.
In addition to performing and recording her own material, Shelley is a versatile lead guitarist. She has played with and recorded CDs for the avant-punk-classical Bonfire Madigan (Kill Rock Stars), Kindness (rocktronicka), and Pele Juju, regional world beat favorites. Shelley can also be heard on CDs by Rosin Coven, Melissa Crabtree, the Redwood Project, Judea Eden, Green Huse, and Gwen Avery. Her songs have made it onto several compilations, including "Calling All Kings and Queens" (with Amy Ray and Sleater Kinny), "wildFire", "SF2000 Timecapsule" and "Wine, Women and Song". Shelley is also the co-creator, musical director and script-writer for a teen and adult animated project called Strange Frame (www.strangeframe.com). And she is honored to have a song featured in the upcoming movie, "Healing Sex", based on the acclaimed psychological text by Staci Haines "The Survivors Guide to Sex - How to Have an Empowered Sex Life After Child Sexual Abuse".
Prior to the X-tet, Shelley was part of the popular West Coast band Jambay, who toured relentlessly for many years and released three independent CDs before disbanding in 1996.

As awesome as ever, Shelly!
author: Gary AnsorgeThe only short coming I saw was there should have been more. I love your improv jams, Shelly, but this CD was as professional and soulful as any I've heard. Keep on trucking,,,
Can't wait to see you on the east coast Shelley!
author: Danielle LombardGood old rock and soul . . . a voice that never lets the melody get away. A groove to the lyrics that just feels right. I love Shelley Doty's musical sense.
Smooth, yet driven, with an edge of mystery
author: The San Francisco ChronicleFrom the January 28th feature article... Shelley Doty shows up at an interview the same way she walks onstage -- relaxed, grounded and comfortable with herself. This same grace emanates from her latest album, "Over the Line,'' in which Doty sings an original blend of rock, jazz, folk and blues. Smooth, yet driven, with an edge of mystery, her third album features songs about love, passion and heartache -- with the title song, "Over the Line," serving as Doty's personal memo about pushing life to its limits, and then some.
Deep and soulful groove
author: East Bay Express"On her newest disc, Over the Line, Doty radiates vast reserves of upbeat creative energy that can easily be heard in the nine dreamy uppers packed onto the album. Her rootsy rock has a deep and soulful groove, with jubilantly jazzy vocals, a folk foundation, and an elasticity that can as easily accommodate Dave Pellicciaro's wailing Hammond B-3 organ or Brian Knave's campfire harmonica as Beth Vandervennet's sleepy cello or Jessica Lurie's plaintive sax. Of course Doty's guitar, electric or acoustic, guides us with a deft and steady hand throughout, but does so in a self-assured and non-showy way, always serving the songs instead of vice versa." Love Shelley Doty and this CD!
author: pretty picky"Over the Line" is great. The music all sounds like it comes from the same artist, but it doesn't all sound the same. The songs are really quite wonderful - both lyrically and musically. And Shelley's voice is very soulful without being over dramatized - she strikes just the right chord. The CD is nicely peppered throughout with cello, harp, B3 organ, sax, and vocal harmonies. The core rhythm section is great, and Shelley's guitar playing is fantastic - from the interesting guitar rhythms to the leads! Even with the great musicianship and production, a great CD still comes down to the songs - which on "Over the Line" are awesome. I really love this CD. Buy it – you won’t be disappointed!
This Lady ROCKS!!!
author: Bourbon CowboyShelley Doty isn't one of those whiny woman songwriters you hear on commercial radio. With her latest CD, Over The Line, she transcends such stereotype with a hard-rocking, masterful guitar playing and intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics provided by inspiring vocals. There is not a weak song on the disc. All the tunes are well-crafted and beautiful. If the music industry understood music instead of money this woman would be a star. Buy the disc and play it loud! You'll be glad you did!
