Interesting and musical, but still looking for a voice?

I came across Shelter Belt in Portland, Maine, when I was seeking refuge from a Dolly Parton Concert I'd attended (another story and best described as An Experience). They were playing in a small bar early in the week and the band sounded well worth listening to over a beer, and so it proved. The range of material and the instrumentation was refreshing and I bought their CD to take home with me. The new album takes a different direction to the previous recording, Rain Home, with a range of musical styles that are hard to describe. Under the World Awhile is quite experimental to my ear, and the band don't seem to have quite defined their own musical niche. Perhaps this is no bad thing, but for my part I'd like to see a kind of focus, coherence, and musical force that isn't yet present in their work. This is not meant to be faint praise, and I'd recommend Under the World Awhile (and Rain Home) for those with an interest in that not-quite Indie part of the musical world. One last thing, I'm not sure either of these recordings capture the same strength as the one live performance I've heard where the coherence and strength seemed to me to be more evident.

In a world of increasing ‘indie’ conformity, Shelter Belt’s newest release, Under the World Awhile, is a sledgehammer to the teeth. It’s difficult to describe an album that can’t be placed into a simple, single category for the ease of the mindless. Each song is a reinvention of a band that appears limitless in musicianship, creativity and guts. This diversity of style certainly is not the result of ‘experimentation’, but obviously the product of each member of this seven-piece band having the ability and initiative to write and perform incredible songs that work magically together to form an dynamic album.
