This recording from 2006 once again features Brent Holl and Shannon Dove but for this album they've invited several friends to join them!
Cheryl Tobler on flute and whistles has always been a member of the band but has been on sabbatical in Scotland working on her PhD in Ethnomusicology. She was in town long enough to do some spectacular work on her wooden Olwell flute which is featured on "Inisheer." Cheryl is also featured in "Shove the Pig's Foot" and the Tune medley on Track 4. She lends back-up on "John Barleycorn" and "Crooked Jack." It's great to have Cheryl on the album!
Jessica Holl appears with Shen Fine for the first time and shares some dazzling vocals. She is featured on "The Goodman" and "Step it Out, Mary." Jessica visited from New Orleans where she teaches music in a private school. She also sings in several local bands and choral groups. Her back up vocals contribute to this album's fine blending harmony.
Bart Reardon makes a return appearance with some great guitar work on "Shove the Pig's Foot" and "Wagon Wheel." He also plays some melancholy lap steel on Shannon's song, "The Bob Dylan Song." Bart is also the recording engineer and mix master! Hail Bart!
Shannon Dove writes the songs and is the lead vocalist on most of the tunes. His songs, "Primer and the Paint" and "The Bob Dylan Song" are the highlights of the album. In addition, Shannon plays some rock solid rhythm guitar on 6 and 12 string Guild and adds fine drumming on Bohdran.
Brent Holl is the arranger and publisher for the band. He plays a 12 string Takamine and 6 string Martin D-2R, both tuned in DADGAD. The unique sound of Shen Fine's guitar accompaniments is achieved by this combination of regular and modal tunings on 6 and 12 string guitars. Brent also plays Bertha the Bass, Bohdran, and percussion.
