Big Barn Records, an independent label in Philadelphia, announces the debut of their featured artist (S)HE and the release of their first full length album Animal. Imagine Al Green, Jimi Hendrix, Biggie, Prince and George Clinton with three female vocalists and you have (S)HE. The group—Andrea Scruggs, Sophia Johnson and Nat’e McNair, Vocals, plus Matt Tuttle, lead guitar and Tom Laskas, bass—combines multiple genres and modern and classical influences to create a sound that is fresh and socially aware.
Seredipity led “Drea”, Sophia and Nat’e, who had been singing together for eight years, to Tom and Matt who happened to hear the girls singing together on that fatefilled night at a downtown club. Musical muses being what they are, and sometimes it’s a struggle, connected the talented, versatile musicians and Big Barn proposed collaboration. The Band united under the original name (S)HE and signed, soon after, to Big Barn Records.
(S)He is a combination of some of Philly's most in-demand performers.
After working with many other artists and various collaborations, the
group has come together to form their own project. All of the members
of (S)He have toured extensively, and a tour for the group is
currently being scheduled for the fall.
Members of (S)He have performed and produced with the following artists:
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
The Violent Femmes
Tom Marshall of Phish and Amfibian
Anthony Krizan of the Spin Doctors
Scott Bricklin of 4 Way Street
Brian Bricklin of Bricklin
Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes
Terry Tompkins of Columbia Records
Emily Lazar at the Lodge NYC
Pete Donnely of the Figs & G Love
...and many more. (S)He has found immediate success in the
Philadelphia market as being voted by area radio listeners 1 of only 5
groups to be selected to perform at the Electric Factory in an event
sponsored by Bon Jovi and Saturn. This year (S)He will be featured on
at least 5 compilations from various record companies (more pending),
and their song Da' Hotness recently landed them a publishing deal .
The song will be licensed aggressively to television and film. They
are also in the process of signing a deal for their music to be
distributed to the European market. Each day the group is offered
more and more opportunities by those who get a hold of their music.
Their sound is fresh and distinct, and they are quickly capturing the
eyes and ears of the industry.
The goal of the artist is to create music that transcends stereotypes and traditional social boundaries. The target audience for this group is the 18-36 m/f socially-aware urban/college scene, which is mostly what the groups’ crowds consist of currently. They have also received interest from the younger high school crowd and have gained quite a following there as well.
