THE XENOPHILE WILDSTYLE...
\"Various Chimeras\" by Shinjuku Zulu:
Steam-era electronica, current pop, 1920\'s dub, post-hip hop, and electro-disco-cheerleader-cabaret describe some of the tracks on Shinjuku Zulu\'s second release \"Various Chimeras\". Over it\'s nineteen tracks the album features twelve different guest vocalists (from rappers to reggae toasters, from r\'n\'b to ragtime singers) in a multi-era pop electronic mash-up. Songs to note are \"Da Riddim Griffin\" (with vocals by actress Caryn Green, MC Shankhini, and the Tokyo GoGo! Cheergirl Team), \"Dirty Liar\" (like the Chemical Brothers meet O Brother), \"Make Me Shake\" (poptronica a la Fergie), the haunting \"Coal Coal Black\" (dub meets blues), and \"Scarborough Fair (A True Dub of Mine)\" (imagine Simon & Garfunkel as done by the Mad Professor).

Shinjuku Zulu press descriptions:

\"...create[s] three-headed songs by grafting cultures onto collaged beasts that growl with different tongues...\"Be My Woman Be My Man\" comes replete with DFA grooves and Herbert snorts...\"We Do Supersonic\" and \"Dirty Liar\" will have your dance floor moving...\"Rainbowbeau\" sees Larissa Gomes bouncing her voice off soft clouds of picazzo strings...my favorite is \"Make Me Shake\" [with] sentences that say so incredibly much with so little...as devastating as anything else this year...often surprising, mostly pleasing, and at a few moments (Make Me Shake, Da Riddim Griffin, and Coal Coal Black) fantastic.\" COKEMACHINEGLOW

Hi-Fi or Headphones

The first five or six tracks are phenomenal, particularily the songs Make Me Shake, Dirty Liar, and Da Riddim Griffin. All are uptempo, in the pop/dance/electronica genres, but with a lot of other influences, like soul, blues and disco punk. Maybe a little bit like Gnarls Barkley mixed with Gorillaz. Later in the CD the downtempo songs stand out, especially the beautiful and sad Coal Coal Black, which has a Massive Attack kind of vibe, and the 21st century take on Scarborough Fair. A very good CD, one that stands repeated listens. Well worth the price--it's practically a double album-- and great for either a big sound system or on the headphones.

Definitely worth purchasing if you dig this type of music!

Bought the CD because I heard and loved Make Me Shake (Gimme Some Crush Crush) elsewhere and wanted to see what the rest of the CD was like - it's got a nice flow and rhythm, but Make Me Shake alone was worth buying the CD, the rest is bonus in my opinion. Still getting a good feel for the CD as a whole - 4 out of 5 if you like this type of music.
