Album Notes

Born in a small town in Nebraska, percussionist Steve Holloway migrated to New York City by way of Denver in the early 1990's. With a strong jazz and pop background, he began playing Irish music when Seamus Egan asked him to record on the Soundtrack of the movie "The Brother's McMullen" in 1995, and later on Seamus' solo CD "When Juniper Sleeps". This lead to numerous tours with the popular Irish group Solas (lead by Seamus) and later the Broadway production of Riverdance in 2000. Steve frequently tours with the North American touring company of Riverdance (the Boyne), and was a founding member of Sin e Ri-Ra at Nine Fine Irishmen in Las Vegas. He's also recorded with Solas, Cathie Ryan, Bonnie Rideout, Marie and Martin Reilly, The McCabes, Mary Rafferty, The Bridies, Jerry O'Sullivan, Karen Casey and Whirligig.

"Next Stop, Seelie Court", is a fun, happy blast of traditional and original tunes. The recording features some of New York's finest musicians, including Donal Clancy and John Reilly (guitar), Marie Reilly, Bonnie Rideout and Maz Swift (fiddle), Mary Rafferty (whistle), Tony Daveron (bouzouki), Martin Reilly (accordian), Donie Ryan (banjo) and Darryl Conlon (mondolin). While the CD is rhythmic and lively, it's all about the tunes, the percussion driving the music but never overpowering the rest of the musicians.

There's plenty of bodhran, but also numerous grooves laid down on Steve's "mondokit", a unique drumset comprised of congas, djembes, bongos and doumbeks, integrated in with snare, toms, kick and cymbals.

Great for set of tunes in a NY setting!
author: Nathan Deese
I first heard the Geese in the Bog set on Marc Gunn's Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, and immediately had to come here and buy the CD. I was interested at first because I wanted to learn Donie Ryan's banjo style, but I found that the CD was chock full of great musicians playing settings of tunes that I don't always hear in local sessions. It's a good learning resource and a pleasurable listen.
