Album Notes

The Shut-Ins' long-awaited Christmas CD, recorded live at San Francisco's Bazaar Cafe. A Very Shut-Ins Christmas is bursting with the tight harmonies, snappy rhythms and quirky wit for which the purveyors of the patent-applied for "hulabilly sound" are well known. Whether it's the Bo Diddly beat of "Little Drummer Boy," the holiday poignancy of "I'd Rather Go to Prison," the examination of gift re-distribution in "Lasso Santa Claus," or the simple island greeting of "Mele Kalikimaka," the Shut-Ins' holiday collection is sure to make you look at Christmas in a whole new light - "Silent Night" contains perhaps the most sacrilegious solo section yet recorded by any man or beast.

Some people think the Shut-Ins are going to Hell for making this record, some people think it's funny, some people think both things....

The Shut-Ins are a mostly acoustic combo from San Francisco who specialize in "hulabilly" - a wacky blend of county-western, honky-tonk, bluegrass and Hawaiian music, all topped with tight vocal harmonies in the style of early- to mid-century acts such as the Blue Sky Boys and the Louvin Brothers. The Shut-Ins are a five-piece group, with ukulele, guitar, lap-steel, stand-up bass and small drum kit. They have a special place in their hearts for upbeat songs of pain, longing, and occasionally, happiness. Add to this an affinity for the bizarre, and a smattering of Hawaiian, and you have a unique combination of musical influences all delivered with "lofty energy and twinkle-eyed hi-jinx."

A Very Shut-Ins Christmas

My kind of funknicity, guys. Uke-hula never sounded better, and we needed some fun holiday music besides. I have harked and heralded all I'm going to. I prefer to hula-rock.

Crosses Cultural Boundries!!!

This is the 3rd year in a row that we pluck "A Very Shut-Ins Christmas" out of our CD collection and travel with it wherever we go during the month of December! Even in non-English speaking cultures, folks ask me "KKJKdlsl123k7fdj" which means "WHO IS THIS!?" because they love it. This is easily my favorite Christmas CD. It's got that Shut-Ins trademark of fantastic musicianship, High energy and fun. Their choice of songs is wonderful and their live performance of them even better. No studio trickery here and no digital effects from Santa. The performance will be in YOUR living room because the recording quality is excellent. These lads can play and sing....Period. In some songs, they even attempt to cover Hawaii with snow... and they succeed! This is definitely a life long investment of holiday cheer and well worth the price. It will keep on giving and will NOT sound dated no matter how many years you dust it off at Christmas time to get a boring party rolling along nice and smooth. It might just be the thing about Christmas you start looking forward to the most. Merry Christmas Shut-ins! And it forever will be, thanks to you!

This will be the only Christmas CD in our collection. We love it.

This is a CD I will keep forever. I must confess I am a big Shut-Ins fan, but I swear, even if I'd never heard of them, I would still love their versions of these songs. I would say they brought new joy to our Christmas. I played the CD in my retail store in SF and the customers loved it. Don't wait until next year to buy this, do it now.
