India's celebrated young vocalist SHWETA JHAVERI is perhaps the only Hindustani female vocalist today, who is equally adept at performing Indian classical vocal and world music. She is a performer of the classical form KHAYAL of north India. She performs Tappa,Thumri,Tarana, Bhajans with equal ease and precision and is also adept at singing Dhrupad & south Indian/Carnatic ragas.
Shweta is the first female exponent from the state of Gujarat-India, to perform Indian clasical music internationally, since her age of 19 yrs.Shweta Jhaveri is also the first Hindustani vocalist to have performed live world vocal music concerts and recorded with world musicians. She is the pioneer khayal performer of the younger generation to have introduced the khayal form to the western world since her teenage years by performing Khayals traditionally and innovatively, outside of India.
In 1999 at the age of 32,Shweta founded a music company called COSMIC KHAYALS,through which she expresses her lyrics and music in the fields of Indian classical vocal and World music.
The word KHAYAL means an idea, thought or imagination. The Khayal form of north India is one of the most enjoyable, traditional but with a lot of scope to improvise, thus a progressive form, among the classical forms, compared to the more authentic Dhrupad.A Khayal is sung as a set of two compositions known as 'Bada khayal'-the elaborative version and Drut khayal or cchota khayal, the faster version. Khayals are sung with various rhythms and brief lyrics in the language of Hindi.
Shweta Jhaveri's label '21stCentury COSMOS'since 2003, started with her Indian classical Cd Avishkar, meaning revealation. It is colorful ragas combined with mesmerizing techniques.Shweta has been accompanied by Ramesh Bapodara on the tabla & pakhavaj(drums)& by Jayant Bhalodkar on the Harmonium,in this Cd.

I think the any debate over Shweta Jhaveri's vocal skills is a fruitless one. She is an absolutely outstanding vocalist of world-class ranking. She possesses a beautiful mellifluous, multi-faceted voice that has the ability to both convey a broad spectrum of emotions and still render the subtlest of colours. She possesses: range, control and technique that convey a mature and self-less approach to music making; an approach which pays due homage to India's history of pursuing spirituality through music. And though others may well disagree, I would argue that within the recent history of Hindustani Classical Vocal Music she is comparable to many who are much better known. Her choice of renditions and the accompaniment too, on this CD are perfectly matched and make for a potentially enthralling aural experience. Why then only four stars? Well, I actually want to give it five But I feel obliged to take away one point for two very rudimentary failings. Firstly the recording quality is absolutely horrendous at the upper end of the scale. Attenuation abound, the speakers/headphones veritably rattle and buzz from the upper frequencies which were not levelled correctly, quite how this could have happened escapes me - it seems we are absent of a sound engineer. Secondly what is equally as inexcusable is the physical production quality. Firstly it needs to be stated, this is NOT a manufactured CD, it's a CDR. Leading on from that the version I received was really beat-up (despite being shrink-wrapped), the inlay paper was creased and the booklet all bent ad damaged, the whole thing looked like a 'C' grade used CD, really not a professional way to deliver your message or your merchandise to your customers and distributors. N.B. It should be made clear that this last point is NOT CD Baby's error nor responsibility, but the rests firmly with the artist or the distributor.
