notes
This is a benefit CD. All net proceeds from the sale of this CD benefit Artists for Literacy - a nonprofit that connects artists and their work to English teachers who are on the front lines of the fight against illiteracy. We are grateful to CD Baby for facilitating these on-line sales.
The Songs Inspired by Literature Project - SIBL - a project of Artists for Literacy - is made up of artists who care about creating a more literate world. We held a contest - 357 songwriters sent in songs from 38 states and 8 countries. We picked the best 10 songs and matched them with commercial cuts written by world class artists: Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, Ray Manzarek, Grace Slick and Aimee Mann.
These songs are the bridge between readers and non-readers. They connect us all to great works of literature and engage our ears so that our eyes may be tempted to drink in some words too. We hope you enjoy Chapter One - it's the first in a series. Visit http://www.artistsforliteracy.org for more information.

Fantastic to use with high school students!
author: Fran ZimmermannStudents and teachers love this CD and use it for a variety of writing projects. I used it last year during "Banned Books" Week since the Odyssey was banned by Plato in 387 B.C. and the songs Calpyso by Suzanne Vega and The Last Temptation of Odysseus by Justin Wells really inspired students to write their own responses to the Odyssey. Great music, great lyrics, great CD. I love it!
Love it!
author: Jessica PaigeI am always looking for book recommendations - and this is a great way to get a feel for the works - I particularly like "Tell Your story walking" and "Dark and Deep"- great idea to do this type of CD.!

A really high-quality benefit CD, with all net proceeds to help teach adults and families how to read. Each of the artists on this CD responded to a call for songs inspired by books, plays or poems. 357 songwriters sent in songs from 38 states and 8 countries. They picked the best 10 songs and matched them with commercial cuts written by world class artists: Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, Ray Manzarek, Grace Slick and Aimee Mann. EVERY TRACK on this compilation is amazing.

A Worthy Investment
author: BridgetThis CD is a great compilation of songs from talented artists. The fact that the songs are based on works of literature adds depth and inspiration to the already considerable talent of the artists. This is a great CD in support of an important cause (adult literacy).
I really liked this.
author: ErikaEnjoyable salute to songwriters' favorite books and poems.
Unique concept + good music + great liner notes = 1 fine CD.
author: Russ "Kaboodle" RogersThis CD doesn't need a cause to be good. But it feels good to support a good cause. The music is as inspired as the concept. I also own Chapter Two. I'm looking forward to Chapter Three.
Absolutely wonderful

The only trouble with this CD is that I am constantly having to get it from my h
author: Suzanne DroverI had no idea when I first heard an interviewer reference this work that it could be so incredible. I really only bought it to benefit literacy, but what a great surprise! Each song is so unique and has sent me to the library to look up some of the works that inspired the music.
a collection of well-written, beautifully produced and ultimately memorable tune
author: ThedaA great work of art inspires others to greatness. Almost all of the songs on this disc are standouts on their own merit; reading the books may add insight to the creative process, but not having read them by no means diminishes them. This is a collection of well-written, beautifully produced and ultimately memorable tunes, and a great gift for any bookworm or English Lit major on your list.
Terrific collection of literary songs
