Album Notes

GRAND CANYON STORY, written and narrated by Mark Sickman, traces the exploration of the Grand Canyon by John Wesley Powell’s ten-man expedition. Powell embarked at Green River Station, Wyoming in April of 1869. Ninety-nine days later, after a harrowing adventure of 1000 miles, the six surviving members of the group emerged ragged and starving at the mouth of the Virgin River in southern Nevada--now Lake Mead.
Powell’s exploits--and the journey of Lewis and Clark--are regarded as the greatest feats of exploration ever achieved in the continental United States.

Rich in detail and lyrically presented, this 2-CD set captures the true spirit of Powell’s adventure--his tenacious leadership, the incredible physical hardship, the audacious courage, the intense psychological interplay among the members of the expedition. Brilliant renditions of traditional music by Mary Z. Cox help bring the story to life.

GRAND CANYON STORY is perfect for anyone who loves a great yarn beautifully told. It’s the ideal audio companion for tourists exploring the Canyon, or driving the lonesome highways of Utah and Arizona.

REVIEWS

Grand Canyon adventure comes alive!
author: MARY Z. COX
I was honored when Mark asked if he could use music from my CDs for this project. He has a wonderful and resonant performing voice that is perfect for the Grand Canyon story. As an added treat, he made up words for many of the instrumentals and they are sung in such a manner as to be completely believable of that time and place. I'm sure that men on such an adventure would make up and sing all kinds of verses to any snippet he might remember from civilization. Also, there are historical photos of the men involved in the inside notes of the CD. My husband and I have enjoyed listening to this Grand Canyon story very much--so much so--that we are going to spend a couple days at the Grand Canyon when we drive to California in June. :) If you love historical adventure with lots of old time style banjo and singing in the background--I think you will find this double CD most enjoyable. :)
