Album Notes

'Sieger's songs have more hooks than a Popiel Pocket Fisherman, more memorable lines than a month of Pat Reusse or Mike Royko columns, and more real American grit than you'd find if you dumped all the cowpunk, Johnny-come-lately, 'roots' phonies into an ingot vat and melted them all on down.' - (Tom Surowics - Twin Cities Reader )

This is Sieger's first record in seven years, an exciting follow-up to his work with his previous band, Semi-Twang.

Among the artists featured on 'El Supremo' are Bill Lloyd, who guests on their collaborative effort, 'Let's Start A Band' and Phil Lee, whose own debut, 'The Mighty King of Love,' is drawing raves across the country. Gurf Morlix, who produced and played with Lucinda Williams for 11 years, contributes some salty mandolin licks on 'High Tension Line.' The rest of the line-up includes many of Nashville's finest players, including Bill Dwyer, Dave Jacques, Rick Schell, Mike Sieger, Joan Besen, and Mike Poole.

Sieger's lived-in baritone, unhurried, soulful guitar playing, and thoughtful, developed songs make this record a must-have.

"...a freewheeling rock n' roll party album..."

(Sieger) transforms rockabilly, jump blues, and pop-rock tunes into fresh, personal songs packed with playful fun and wise-guy wisdom.

I hate this record...

...because I didn't make it myself. The drumming and bass playing are very nice. There is a variety of well-crafted songs. And the artist sings his ass, which I happen to know is not very prodigious to begin with, off. Buy it and see. If there were any justice, John Sieger would be imprisoned for putting the rest of us so-called singer-songwriters to shame.

Makes you remember why you fell in love with music.

El Supremo is rootsy, rockin', soulful, tender and raw. No overly-coy, clever, contrived lines, just the muse of a thinking, feeling man. John oozes cool from every pore without even trying, leaving other singer-songwriters in the dust. He throws around incredible lyrics as if it's an afterthought, not something overwrought. "I Ain't Gonna Drink My Coffee Black No More" is a simple yet potent metaphor for living. "High Tension Line," a beautiful slow waltz with inspired horns, is a great contradiction to its title. The players are excellent, tasty and top notch; the production is a tribute to un-slickness, and when you hear this record, you will know why John Sieger is a huge star already to those who know him.

Everytime I hear High Tension Line I'm reminded of what a great songwriter Sieger is. His roots are deep in rythm and blues, rock and roll, and Americana. There's more than that but that gives you a start. Deep. This CD shows it soup to nuts. It's got soul,Johns soul. And he shares it with us. Wait 'till you hear him scream I Want You. I love this CD! GT
