Silent Kids, Atlanta’s entry in the field of pop psychedelia, returns to the fore with the release of Dinosaurs Turn into Birds. Like its predecessor, 2003’s Tomorrow Waits, Dinosaurs Turn into Birds features all sorts of vintage equipment, tape loops and sound effects, analog tracking, and general inventiveness. The band’s sound has been described by one scribe as “a distinctive blend from what must surely be an impressive record collection.”
Listeners of Tomorrow Waits will immediately notice the production values on Dinosaurs. Gone are the lo-fi home recordings, complete with oregano canisters as percussion instruments, replaced by professional studio qualities that brings out the quirky nature of the band’s compositions. The band doesn’t fall into the trap of using the studio for gimmicks; rather, the band fleshes out its songs with flourishes and atmospherics that add to the listening experience.
Silent Kids is the collaborative effort of guitarists Michael Oakley and Jeff Holt, who originally founded the band in 2001 along with Scott Holt. The band’s remaining lineup has been a revolving cast of characters (though drummer Leanna Fugate has been a constant since 2004), and the myriad of lineup changes contributed to the five-year wait for Dinosaurs.
