Album Notes

Parent's Choice awards this one GOLD! Award-winning British storyteller, Simon Brooks has done it once more! This CD is again for all ages, but young people and adults will get more from it than really young children. A great listen either at home, in the car, in a boat, or on an aeroplane for anyone who loves stories.

"My kids bought your CD and love it! This is the only time they are quiet in the car. It is so lovely to be able to drive normal again."

Humans have a lot to learn and stories can help us. There have been people fueled by greed; and people who have fallen because of jealousy. There are also those who have been short sighted and these tales are about such people and how they found their way. The stories within 'A Tangle of Tales', I hope, can help us lean and heal.

"Simon, oh do I love your CD! Drove an extra 10 miles today just so I wouldn't have to stop listening...seriously, drove up the coast farther than I'd meant to drive because I was rapt. Your voice is fantastic."

Hear folk and faerie tales told by award winning British storyteller, Simon Brooks. Audience members, when they've finished their imaginary voyage and have stopped shaking from laughter, or have been left deep in thought, will wonder how so many memorable characters and voices came out of one man. With his bodhrán, Simon will carry you thousands of miles and across hundreds of years so you can walk across giants’ backs to see the stories in your mind as clearly as if you were there. You will find yourself rejuvenated once you have heard Simon tell his tales.

"Storytelling is now just a big part of what we all do as a family and has been a great addition to our usual regimen of books, art, and music. Really wonderful. The kids now tell their own, as well as repeating many of yours. [The Goat from the Hills and Mountains (from 'More Second-hand Tales') is] probably the all-time family favorite. My six-year-old can tell it nearly verbatim, with accents and all, and my four-year-old likes to try too. Often when we tell them they're not allowed to do something or whatever they'll put on that goat voice and answer, "Eeeehhhhhh. Waddayadoinah? Don't you know who I am!?!?!"

Simon performs anywhere he can. He has performed extensively in New England and has performed not only at the Connecticut Storytelling Festival, The New England Storytelling Conference - Sharing the Fire, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, but also at hundreds of schools, libraries and private functions. Simon lives in New London, New Hampshire, New England, New World with his wife, two children, a cat and guinea pig and a rather large collection of books.

This CD features music written by Rachel Clark who appears playing flute, tin whistle, and accordion, along with Steve Glazer on guitar, and Rick Barrows on mandola and mandolin.

not just for grownups

Perfect narration for a couple of grownups on a long drive. Brooks does this thing with fairy tales -- he leaves all the enchantment, all the atmosphere in place and somehow manages to make them sound contemporary. Long after the stereo clicked off, I played his stories in the private screening room of my own imagination. One CD provided hours of pleasure!

Creative and Fun Collection with Stories and Music

"A Tangle of Tales" from storyteller Simon Brooks is far from a messy snarl at all. Rather, it is full of appealing stories. With stories from Celtic lands, Vietnam and India, Simon creates a smooth and enjoyable set of stories that never knot up your mind. Told with his genuine British accent and featuring custom music by the storyteller and friends, Simon gives you a story set this is overall rather calming yet might surprise you in how quickly the layers of the tales take you into their welcoming. In one small critique, the track listings do not line up with what is printed in the package. It seems that the music in between tracks has not been taken into account. You might find it a bit of "hide and seek" when you first try to find the stories on your CD player. On an otherwise excellent CD, this is a minor point. These days, with the new electronic ways that people buy CDs and tracks of music and stories, not everyone gives as much thought to the CD case as Simon has. Frankly, like all of his CD collections, the artwork is excellent. The teller and the artist (Rob Brookes) have joined forces to create both a visual and auditory adventure. Second-hand Tales 3

I have all three of Simon Brooks' CDs and would recommend them highly. I also had the good fortune to see him perform in his 'early days' at his then local library where both children and parents were enjoying the experience. Since then he has gone from strength to strength. On my next visit to the US from England I would hope to be able to again watch Simon perform .
