Why might particular nursery rhymes have lasted through the centuries? The combination of simple melodies, easy rhyme, and generous repetition makes for durability. The majority of these rhymes originated in the British Isles. Most were believed to be first published in the mid-eighteenth century.

Whatever their origins, the classic nursery rhymes often surface in everyday culture, not just in the context of young children. The rhymes delight young and old while helping to connect generations.
