REVIEWS

This CD is chock full of the best work to-date by this mega-duo. Sirens take many turns on this CD and there are many songs that the jazz lovers will find appealing to the ear, as well as those of us who crave a good love song. Sirens doesn't miss the opportunity to pull the heart strings with the song "What in This World" which is a touching song even for the toughest love-song critic. Waiting for Ryan is a tribute to motherhood, a lullaby in the making. The song Smile is one of the most catching songs I have heard in years. Laksmi's Lament is a perfect song, which utilizes the enormous talent of Allen DiCenzo. This song was also recorded in his state-of-the-art facility, "Circa Productions", located in Central Ohio. Blood is Red and Time Thing are punchy expressions of their roots in schooled music, and the lyrics offer a story beyond radio simplicity. Beyond the music, the cover art of this CD is worth the asking price of the CD. The renowned Dave Egan, "a legendary engineer/producer/artist who has an eye for the subtle", produced the design and layout of the CD. The cover art "created by Cindy Matyi an Ohio resident is unbelievable. It brings you back to the days when cover art was an important and respected part of the music business. Sirens have been keeping up a fast-paced performance schedule, which means that you will find an opportunity to see this talented duo live and in person. After you take a listen to this CD, you won't want to miss a live show! " -Ohio Musician Magazine

"I believe you can rate a musical work by its ability to transport the listener. Sometimes music deliberately seeks to be escapist, through production tricks or electronic sleight of hand. Other times it happens more accidentally, naturally. The Sirens' self-titled debut is one such example." "Sirens represents the first full-length collaboration of longtime local session players' Kay Harris and Molly Pauken. Harris on vocals, Pauken on various guitars, and some of their friends deliver a dozen songs that balance a range of styles and emotions. All is powerfully delivered, with either moderate abandon or restraint, with more of the latter represented with gentle acoustic orchestrations." "When true musical grace and balance is reached, the listener, if open to suggestion, is carried off as though hypnotized by music in tune, rhythmically precise, with just the right vocal or instrumental inflections. In short, it occurs when there are no imperfections to distract. From a reviewer who hates superlatives, Sirens is no less than an amazing accomplishment." -Adam Garratt, Columbus Alive

"Sirens" CD ranks in the 10 top Columbus releases for 2000! "Sirens, (Kay Harris, Molly Pauken and band) deliver a dozen songs that transcend genre classifications. In a way it represents more a holistic view of music, where beauty is realized in melody or movement first, and an appropriate flavor is then added as accompaniment. Few locals take this route, probably because few can realize music as Harris and Pauken do." -Brian Lindamood & Adam Garratt, Columbus Alive
