CD permanently out of stock. Sorry!

World beat influence (salsa, bossanova, samba, middle-eastern) weaved into a base of funk, jazz and pop - very groovy, very danceable.

notes

From tangy folk to deep-bottomed Brazilian grooves, from middle-eastern trance to Celtic revelry, SMH remains one of the hottest emerging world folk acts today. Sharing bases in Seattle and New York City, the band is currently recording a new LP, featuring a fully-stocked, exciting new lineup.

Since 1999 Kathleen Deane's sultry, soulful vocals and djembe-drumming prowess have alchemically combined with songwriter Jody Rubel's acoustic guitar-based world folk sound, drawing fans nationwide. Spicing up the mix with percussion, didgeridoo and flute, Joseph Sanchez has gracefully supported SMH for most of its existence.

A recent addition to the lineup is Violinist Talia Toni Marcus, beginning with a fiery performance at the 2003 Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. Talia's whirling and twirling as she strokes the violin has delighted audiences for years, playing in the past with Van Morrison, The Band, and many more.

New musical dimensions opened for the band this year with the addition of Greg Barnes, an experienced musician having a solid, funky, style with jazz influences, lends a thick, syrupy, and interesting, foundation to SMH, playing fretless, fretted and standup basses.

Recently, SMH added avid world/hip-hop drummer Rachman Ross to the mix for a double bill with bluesman Corey Harris at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. With the addition of Rachman and Barnes on drum kit and bass, the band has expanded its rhythmic depth, beckoning dancers to delight in the Harem's sonic tapestry.

SMH has appeared at a variety of prominent venues on both east and west coasts. East coast venues include the Open Center, Le Bar Bats, Tower Records, Borders Books, and the Knitting Factory. In their home-turf of Seattle, they have performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival, Hempfest, Rolling Thunder, and numerous clubs; and have been featured on radio shows such as "The Beat" with Dave Beck on KUOW 94.9Fm, Seattle's NPR station).

Major upcoming dates include the Northwest Folklife Festival, and east and west coast tours. SisterMonk Harem welcomes you to join the Harem for a performance soon. Please see our Gigs page for the most recent calendar.
