What is SisterMonk you ask? The name, like the music, demands reflection, savoring like a bottle of fine wine. A bouquet of paradoxical, yet harmonious flavors…
Aged in a barrel of tangy funk, the solid groove of SisterMonk is essential to its taste and sound. Rock and more than just a hint of world influence (samba, soca, salsa, mid.-eastern) blend playfully with the tang of funk, adding a full-bodied feel with a touch of spice. This dynamic, rhythmical interaction is one of the defining ingredients of SisterMonk. The result? After just a few tastes your body will erupt into uncontrollable dance.
Weaving our tapestry together and completing our bouquet are rich, soulful vocals, meant to evoke an emotional response, stimulating to the heart and senses with a taste distinctly chocolate noir. Searing solos enhance and intensify our creation, driving home the groove and emotion that so characterizes SisterMonk. BON APPETIT!
Formed in 2000, the core of SisterMonk can be found in the collaborative efforts of musical duo Jody Rubel and K. Deane. A reflection of their polar opposite personalities, the duos songs are borne on the border of distinctly different lands. You’ll feel in their music a fine-tuned play between subtle tension and dynamic release, as cultures mingle and marry, birthing something completely new.
Accompanying the duo over the years have been some of the best performers in the Pacific Northwest. Most recently their line-up includes L. A. brothers Stephan and Rachman Ross on bass and drums, best known for their tight, in-the-pocket grooves and Tracy Ferrara on alto and soprano saxophones (well known nationally for her years performing with award-winning rhythm and blues band Swamp Mama Johnson).
Audiences of all ages, from east to west coasts continue to be drawn to the music of SisterMonk for their original sound and provocative lyrics. With a solid and growing fan base, the band is a popular festival favorite, drawing capacity crowds and club owners know their dance floors will be full to the wee hours with SisterMonk on the stage. SisterMonk has appeared at a variety of prominent venues on both east and west coasts. East coat venues include The Knitting Factory, Open Center, LeBarBat’s, SUNY New Paltz (opened for Michael Franti & Spearhead), Tower Records and Border Books. Pacific Northwest venues include the NW Folklife Festival, Seattle Hempfest, Rolling Thunder Democracy Tour (opened for Zap Mama), Nectar, Evergreen St. College, Bastyr U., Humboldt State U., and numerous other clubs and venues in the area. They have been featured on radio shows such as “The Beat” with Dave Beck – KUOW 94.9FM (NPR), KBCS’s “Roots and Branches” segment and KSER 90.7FM’s “The Sunlit Room.”
