    sj tucker is a modern acoustic wonder, she sings great songs that speak to the pagan community, she is a joy to listen to.

    Tangles has already been on a seven hour trip from Johannesburg SA to mid-Botswana: has been re- and re-listened to and appreciated, lyrics inspected and understood with all their shades. SJ's voice is arrestingly pleasing company: she's good!

    Her last album saw her flirting with multi-layered vocals on a few songs. This one is full blown! And it's just *beautiful*!!

  • Slow burn with a big payoff

    Although this disc didn’t jump out at me as much as Haphazard did, the more I listen the more it grows on me. It’s definitely a slow burn with a big payoff. There’s a lot of artistic expansion on this disc, and less direct homage to the artist’s influences. The prominent vocal harmonies sound amazing; they give the songs more body and in particular propel “Pixie Can’t Sleep” towards R&B territory (in a good way). The poppier songs are accessible without being one-dimensional; “Mary Mary” and “Drum” are ethereal. Overall, there’s plenty here to sink your teeth into, lyrically and musically. Be sure to stock up on the old EP’s as well.

    Her website is skinnywhitechick.com and you gotta laugh at that. But her music isn’t a laughing matter. It’s sort of that left behind solo girl acoustic folk music that the lovely anti-folksters cling to. Memphis, Tennessee however is her home rather than the bowels of Manhattan. Her sound is a mixture of Tennessee influences and Joni Mitchell. Singer/songwriters take note, this is what you should be doing and how you should sound.

    On the way to one of S. J.'s shows recently, I listened to one of her old lo-fi EPs, and then listened to *Tangles* on the way out. The contrast was interesting and encouraging. Her voice continues to become more mature, more controlled and skillful. I do miss some of the more growly, lower-register vocals I hear in person, but the lighter, smoother sound seems to go with the mood of the album. This is a sweet album in a strange way, suited to the season, despite the snowy footprints, dripping blood, and rotten apples that show up-- as winter always lurks behind summer.
