Armed only with the knowledge of Skip Martin as the lead singer of not one but two legendary R&B groups, Kool and the Gang and the Dazz band I really did not know what to expect from his first solo jazz project "Miles High". So I will tell you what I found out and what I quickly realized.
The Cat can play really play. (A fact that any idiot should have known...duh. Kool and the Gang and the Dazz Band! Both of these groups built on Jazz foundations. To be invited into these groups one cannot simply be a player!
One can still make jazz that can appeal to the novice and the seasoned listener. This is a great CD to introduce someone who really has had a hard time in the past finding an opening into the jazz world because it is flavored strong jazz notes and some simple R&B backgrounds.
The cut Miles High was written the night Miles Davis died so in more than just a small way this album is dedicated to him. And that is why the title cut is my personal favorite cut along with #2 Smooth Sailing with a beginning that will remind you of Michael Jackson's Human nature and #3 Apropos which all really remind me of the stuff Miles did later in his life like Man with the Horn. There is also a really lovely version of "You are my Starship" on this CD. I would not say so if not true, as Starship maybe my favorite song of all-time. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the spoken word version of "Apropos" and the sensual whisper of "Are You Ready". Believe me you wont be ready for this one.
So the last word from me is join the "Miles High" club it's worth the ride.

...Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd ... would open their set with this tune.

When you put the new Skip Martin "Miles High" CD in your player for the first time ever, you'll wonder why the buzz about this project isn't a loud roar. Track one is a groove called "Do Da". This song reaches out and grabs you firmly from somewhere deep in the pocket. Track 2 is called "Smooth Sailing" and features a well done call and response with Skip Martin on trumpet and Ronnie Laws on saxophone, very well done. Track three is called "Are You Ready." This song is a blend of classic styles, if Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd were in the same band they would open their set with this tune. Skip is featured on trumpet and vocals on "Are You Ready". If you are going to do a cover do it well. Skip presents a new version of Norman Connors' and Michael Henderson's Starship, updated for the new millennium and mighty tasty. The severity of the groove returns on the next track, Miles High, clearly a tribute to Miles Davis. Skip Martin is well known for his work with Kool And The Gang and the Dazz Band. His improvisational vocabulary is explored for a new flock of fans on this project. Whether you're in first class or coach this CD is perfect to take along for the ride. The final cut is called "Apropos" and it puts a close on a CD that ends too soon and leaves the listener yearning for much more. Skip Martin is truly bringing the pain and the cure, listen up - www.GrooveDoctorsRadio.com.
