Album Notes

SKULGRINDER - Island of Lost Souls
The US merchants of molten metal music, SKULGRINDER, release their premiere CD. "Island of Lost Souls" combines intelligent, witty lyrics with heavy melodic vocals, expressive drumming, finger-bending bass runs, and grinding metal-guitar riffs. Skulgrinder can best be described as traditional metal. Taking cues from Sabbath, Priest, Metallica and Maiden, they mold their talents into 21st century sonic brain-bashers while retaining the distinct qualities of the great icon metal bands. "Island of Lost Souls" is a loosely based concept album in which each song represents a different character in a city suffering from years of internal decay. Come, enter the city... If you dare!

Brian Andersen - Communication Vortex (vocals)
Michael Knight - Electric Grind Mechanizm (guitars)
Curt Robinson - Tremor Generator (bass)
Kato J. Peragine - Continuum Accelerator (drums)

Concept album that works

I'm usually a bit leery of concept albums as a rule, since I think there are more failed attempts than there are successful ones out there, but "Island of Lost Souls" is a pretty good one. Even without knowing that each of the songs represents the point of view of someone in a city that has crumbled into chaos and ruin it's a strong album. The production quality is a bit rough, but the songs are pretty well written, and the band is technically good with a strong lead singer. There's a lot of variety in the songs, as befitting the theme, and that makes for a very interesting result. Some of the lyrics are a bit cliché, but that doesn't really detract from the whole.
