"It's a good sign when the first three songs of a record have you wondering 'why haven't I heard of her before?'" Acoustic Guitar magazine writes about 22-year-old California native Megan Slankard, "Such is the case with Freaky Little Story... Slankard's vocal style is so distinctive that simply naming influences (Ani DiFranco, Alanis Morissette) doesn't do it justice. Her vocal melodies are immediately arresting, she uses hip-hop phrasing and whisper-to-roar dynamics like a pro, and she never lets her impeccable technique eclipse the emotion she pours into her performances."

After the release of Freaky Little Story (2003), Megan appeared on the Learning Channel's What Not To Wear, which generated a flurry of CD sales that placed her in the top ten of both CD Baby and Amazon.com for several months. Because of the episode's popularity (the show's most watched episode), the show's producers will feature her in a follow-up program to be aired in September.

Overall Megan had sold 13,000 units of her first two albums (Freaky Little Story 2003, Lady is a Pirate 2001), and she has a third album scheduled for release in September. Her song "Too Bad You" (from Freaky Little Story) was also included on San Francisco AAA station KFOG's compilation CD, and is in heavy rotation on KOSO in Modesto, KQPT in Chico, and KPIG in Santa Cruz.

She has been featured in Rockgrl Magazine, Owl Magazine, The Synthesis, and online sources Fresh Tracks and Women In Rock, in addition to Acoustic Guitar magazine, whose editors named Freaky Little Story one of their top albums of 2005. She was a final selection artist for RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned Artists Volume 3 compilation CD; an A&R Online featured artist; a Song and Film Spotlight artist; and, an Acoustic Cafe featured artist on the "One to Watch" syndicated radio program (sponsored by the USA Songwriting Competition).

Slankard also co-wrote and performed the title track to founding Dire Straits member David Knopfler's new record, Ship of Dreams. She will again perform on his upcoming American/Canadian release.

Megan has performed in over 75 cities in five different countries, including at showcases in Boston (NEMO) and Toronto (NXNE), on three tours as support for David Knopfler (Germany and England), at a concert as a finalist for the Pantene Pro-Voice Competition (New York City), and at the international festival InGuitar in Zurich (Switzerland). She is performing with the Modesto Symphony this September.

    I really dig this CD. I don't understand the feature reviewer's comparisons to either Ani or Alanis. Those two are mutually exclusive. So which is it? Neither. Very rarely do I find any comparisons to Ani D. to be even remotely 'on', and to compare Megan Slankard to Alanis is an insult to Megan and her superb songwriting. Anyway, there's some good stuff here. While there are a few tracks that don't do much for me, it's all very listenable, and when this CD is left to run it has an overall sound that is very satisfying. As far as singles go, I suggest you hop in a car with a decent sound system, hit the highway, queue up "Dirty Wings" and "Lose Me", and crank it. Ahhhhh.

    This CD definitely blew me away. I had heard "Too Bad You" and "Mockingbird" and I was a little worried that those would be the highlights, but it only got better from then on! The thing that surprised me was the diversity. Megan of course has the pop songs and the folk songs..but some even border on country and others hold more of a soul feel. It's definitely not your typical pop/folk CD. It's much better than that :)

    I also heard Megan on What Not To Wear last summer when I was living in Chicago. I wrote her name down in my journal hoping that i would hear more of her later. I had sort of lost track of that venture and then was so excited to see her featured on the website! she's just fantastic. a refreshing bit of why so many of us fell in love with sheryl crow and jewel in the 90's. absolutely amazing.

    Not only is this my new favorite album, it may just go onto my top ten album of all time list - it is that good. Recommended to me by a friend, I dropped by CD Baby and listened to the tracks online. This is the way to sell music online, people. I was able to listen to the entire CD and get a feel for it and whether or not I liked the style before plunking down my money. The problem with reviewing a great album is how do you single out one great song over another. This is one disc you can put in your machine, hit play and leave for a while without feeling bored. This is a great album. No arguments. Hopefully, she'll make it big and tour outside the northern California area, but honestly, I'd be willing to make the drive to see her play live. There are only a hand full of artists that I'd do that for, she is that good on the disc.     After seeing Megan on WNTW, I couldn't get "Too Bad You" out of my head. Now that I've listened to the entire CD - several times - I can't get most of the songs out of my head! The beat, the tone, the voice, the lyrics - WOW!! My son now asks for "Jake's music" whenever we get in the van. He thinks it is his CD and will bounce and bop whenever he hears the beginning. Just proves you don't have to "be grown" to have good musical taste.

    Freaky little story is so “over the top” good I don’t even know if I realize how attached to it I’ll be yet. I guess “Too Bad You” is supposed to be the “single” but it’s not even close to being the best song on the CD. This is the type of CD you listen to all the way through, not just pick songs off it. It’s a work of art as a whole like albums used to be. Every song just grabs you and won’t let go. Sit down with the liner notes open and listen with good headphones, it’s a wild emotional ride. Megan has phrasing and delivery of musical notes using her voice down to a fine art. Everything is “just there” like the finest jazz musician playing a horn. What she is able to do with her voice transcends what she was born with, the output seems even finer then the instrument is capable of. This is an instant classic for me and one of the top 10 of my collection of 500+ CDs.

    Thank god for TLC and "What Not To Wear." That's the show that introduced me to Megan Slankard. I was so impressed with the music snippets that were featured on the show that I bought "Freaky Little Story" right away. I LOVE this CD! Megan's songs are well crafted, her voice soars, the lyrics have depth, the band rocks, and the CD now plays constantly on my player. Do yourself a favor and get this CD.     No point in giving Megan Slankard's freaky little story anything less than 5 stars. She was really good on her own, but backing her up with a band gives her talent more emphasis--she made great choices with that group! Megan's word-stories are clever and make sense on their own and in the musical context. Consider me a big fan from the moms-over-40 demographic!

    I received the CD Saturday right before work. I loved it so much, I put it on repeat the whole night. Seriously. That's seven hours people. The cd is a perfect blend of great lyrics, interesting music, unique vocals, and vibrant energy. Too Bad, Dirty Wings, Addy's Tattoo, Holding Off, and It's All My Fault are personal favorites, totally addicting sound and lyrics that you can sing along to. This girl's voice, the way she uses it is unique, you'll find yourself singing along to songs before you've even heard the whole thing, and you'll think you can predict how her voice will sound, but she'll do something with her voice that's completely unexpected. If you're thinking about buying it, Just Do It.

    like many of you, i purchased this cd after seeing megan on tlc's what not to wear. i've had the cd for about 1 week and have not listened to anything else. how many of you have cds that you skip over half the songs to get to the good stuff? this isn't one of them. every single freaking song either makes you dance, reflect, or wish you had her other cd. my sincere thanks go to megan and her band. ya done good, kids :)

    saw and first heard of megan on the tlc show :D after the show was over, headed straight for my computer and bought her cd. i reckon it's my bestest (is that a word? lol) buy of the year. every song on the cd is fantastic. if i have to pick a fave(s), it's gotta be "too bad you" and/or "mocking bird". good luck with everything megan and hope u and the band will get signed soon. =) ps: cdbaby rocks too! ;)

    CD is very good. Considering I only heard bits of the songs on TLC, I am very impressed by the originality and diversity of the songs on it. The song arrangement is also well done and makes it very easy to listen to in the order which the songs were placed. No need to hit Skip, ever!

    I am so impressed with this CD. I saw Megan on TLC's What Not to Wear and heard bits of some of her songs so I ordered the CD hoping it would be good. It is one of the few CD's that you can put in and listen to the entire way through. In every song, you can hear the passion in her voice. I love it and I plan to buy her other CD.

    Megan Slankard is, without a doubt, a superb singer/songerwriter. Unlike her debut CD, Lady is a Pirate, Megan is backed up on freaky little story by the approriately named Megan Slankard Band, which has a very tight, comfortable sound. The band took some getting used to, since before this album Megan essentially played solo acoustic guitar. But the album is full of the typical Slankard phrasings, grooves and lyrics, especially with songs such as "too bad" and "flying backwards" A very good buy. The bonus track, "Salt" was a welcomed surprise. GLEE!

    having seen megan perform solo several times, and with "lady is a pirate" holding a position of distinction in my cd collection, i was not sure how i would feel about hearing her powerful, but passionate and lilting voice framed with more instruments and fuller arrangements. this cd exceeded my hopes as the band compliments her playing and singing beautifully while retaining all the force, emotional impact and intimacy of her solo live performances. the new songs show depth and maturity and display all of her unique charm as well. kudos!

    This cd is amazing from beginning to end! I've been listening to it for a week straight and I'm not near tired of it. Megan's guitar playing is so soothing and beautiful, she's not like some artists who are famous for playing the guitar and singing but can't actually play the guitar (michelle branch, avril lavigne). And it just means so much that she writes every part of all of her songs. You should definately have this cd for your collection and tell as many people about it as possible.

    Have you ever had a band that actually makes you WANT to call your radio station and request that the single be played? For most real lovers of music, we never have. At least I havn't... But this one is different. With learned-but-unique sound and style reminicent of Jewel, Alanis, McLachlan, James Taylor and Jason Mraz, it makes you want to join her street team and put stickers on your car. One listen and you will be hooked, not by "hollywood" slick production but buy carefully placed guitar hooks, smart lyrics and a voice that makes you want to go see a live show. Songs like "Nearly Almost Always" with its almost Zepplin-esqe rythym and guitar, and "Too bad You" which could be a major chart-burner, blend with other tunes to make a well thought out, and well played album. Bravo to this one...an escape from the norm...thank God one of them made it out alive.

    As a guitar tech and Sound engineer for many major artists, I was having a hard time lately getting enthused about new music and/or artists. That is until I did sound for Megan Slankard and David Knopfler here in Santa Barbara! I thought - OK. another singer/songwriter playing the same D-C-G format. Megan completely blew me away. Alone under the lights, she got up and owned the stage and each song. Never missing a note as she sang beautifully and pulled off some wicked guitar moves too! I was so happy to take her CD home that night - slap it in the car CD player and be blown away even further. Amazing production-songwriting-arranging-and artwork. All from a 19 year old! This CD gives new hope that music is still happening in this homogenized world. Along with Kris Delmhorst and Kathrin Shorr, Megan is the trifecta of new music for me. Give this CD a try - It will be the best money you have spent on music in a LONG time!

    This collection of songs is so rich, that with each listen there are new things which I discover. Megan's voice is versatile, pure, and powerful. Her lyrics are wise, clever, and so human it hurts sometimes. The intrumental work is delicious. I had to buy three copies of this CD, so that my husband and I could each have one in our own vehicle, and the third lives in the CD player in our home. This is simply the best music we've heard in YEARS...(and we've been listenin' to music for more than 4 decades!) My only concern: How long til the next CD comes out, Megan?

    Okay, I've been a fan of Megan Slankard for a little over a year now after seeing her in the Pro-Voice concert last year, honestly, she should have won. I found her to be amazing. I was looking forward to her new cd w/her band because she was so excited about it. I got it and haven't stopped listening to it! She bumped Dave Matthews solo cd out of my player which is almost unheard of for a cd to do. specially since I had just gotten the new DM cd and had been looking forward to it for MONTHS. Megan's new CD is that good. She's created something so perfect and rare that, to me, its only in the company of a select few cds. Ani DiFranco's Out of Range CD and the Cranberries Stars CD. The cd has beautiful lyrics, the music is catchy, her voice is amazing...as a whole it's just perfect. totally worth buying at a price u can't beat. This is not a teenybopper from some eteam trying to sell something not worth selling, im a serious music fan that thinks this singer has what's needed to take you on her journy. I've gone, it's something you shouldn't miss.

    It is worth mentioning that, typically, I do not find a lot of indie/pop/alternative/folksy music all that interesting. Thus, in a genre wherein so many groups seem content to copy everyone elses´ chord progressions and singing style, it is unbelievably refreshing to hear Megan Slankard´s Freaky Little Story. Each song is unique but never obscure, catchy yet complex, and there is a very broad spectrum of musical styles from track to track. Where some bands seem to stretch the borders of randomness a bit too much (or not nearly enough), Freakly Little Story is all held together remarkably well by Megan´s FANTASTIC voice, the versatility, clarity, and phrasing of which absolutely CANNOT be overstated. For goosebumps, listen to Addy´s Tattoo. Then try a funky, in-your-eye Forget. Or compare any two charts on the album, really. Same voice, but with a totally different affect and attitude about it from song to song. And in my opinion, all are equally successful in and of themselves. I think that one of the most telling things about this CD is that I honestly can´t name a favorite track. I can name, oh, eight or nine, off the top of my head. And for a music composition major, an extremely discerning and critical music snob (so I´ve been told!), that says a lot. PS: the backup band rocks too, weaving an innovative and complex web of cool stuff just beneath the surface, which supports Megan brilliantly.

    Wow. First listen and I already love this disk! I really liked Megan's first CD, but this one is another animal altogether. The songwriting and musicianship is just stellar, and the production on this record is supportive of that basic quality.
