Yep. "Trieste" is the sixth cd from Sleeping Dogs Lie which is recorded entirely with found object and homemade instruments. The thought behind this recording was "can you make music out of junk?" Maria Burks of CMJ Magazine writes "The Florida-based experimental indie rock band Sleeping Dogs Lie brings a whole new meaning to lo-fi recordings".
As far as the instruments, I made a guitar out of plywood, fishing string, twine, bolts for tuners and bamboo skewers for frets... man, I did a bad job with that fret job! I kinda had to play all around the "guitar" until I found a decent chord and said "sounds good here, let's make a song." I also made a big stand-up bass out of plywood and pine. I used picture wire for strings. It's really hard to keep that in tune, but it actually plays and sound pretty nice. The drum kit if metal 5-gallon drums with clear yellow vinyl shower curtains for heads... I used a big beer bucket for the kick... not very deep, but the shelf bracket with the golf ball on the end is used as the mallet and it play pretty smoothly and sounds pretty sweet. Topped it off with a silver serving tray for a cymbal. Other instruments include: Bob's Barricade reflector, egg slicer/ Corona Bottles & drinking glasses/ sea shells / bucket handle / bucket bottom for cymbal / piece of wood with string / cut up shower curtain xylophone / taped paper tube and sticks / metal bathroom waste basket...
Sleeping Dogs Lie started in 1996 in a small apartment in West Palm Beach, Florida with a Tascam 4-track, Alesis drum machine (credited as “Dr. Uma Chine” on several cds) and a $10 Realistic microphone. After spending a year of recording over 100 songs, Guenette decided self-release the music under the name of Sleeping Dogs Lie and soon after, the “Joy” cd was released in 1997. Jake Cline of CITY LINK magazine in Miami declared that “David Geffen and MTV would be wise to pursue the Joy cd”. With no other stable band line-up, Guenette continued to record and released the second 12-song cd “Slightly confusing to a stranger” (2000), which was more lo-fi and experimental than Joy. Splendidzine.com declared the song “Buddy” to be “song of the year.” 2002 saw the release of a more stripped-down, acoustic cd called “Nude.” The song “Burl Ives Died” from Nude is the Sleeping Dogs Lie top-seller on iTunes. “Head first down the stairs” was a 22-song cd released in 2006 with an energetic lo-fi indie vibe that again captured the attention of critics and fans alike. The “Swirl” cd (2007) was released with 22-songs, the 12 remastered and long-awaited songs from the debut tape and 10 new songs. The sixth cd "Trieste" was an all-homemade / found-instrument cd released in April of 2009 lauded by CMJ late in 2009. La Luz is the latest cd (2010) that is an all-ambient electronic cd inspired by the terrains of New Mexico and the Big Sky country.
