The "Slim Chance Blues & Rhythm Revue" is a stand-alone act in the Bay Area music / recording scene. As an unassuming group of journeyman R&B players; they are intent on putting across their soul-stirring, rollicking dance music with the pure feeling and energy they have coined as: "Blues & Rhythm". The emphasis and approach to their music is slightly altered from the 'industry-standard', commercial perspective in that, they don't want you to just listen to it: They want you to feel it, participate and celebrate with them.
The measure they use is to give their listening audience 'double their money's worth' in good times, dance and show.
The current line up consists of a "clock-tight" rhythm section including Lenny Gurule' on guitar, Tom Grable on bass and David Liotta on drums; with Wayne Nordby on vocals. On stage and in the studio; the balance of their message is carried by (some or all) former members Ross Gershenson - harp, Randy Sheppard - keyboards, Jerry Bob Clark - guitar and the "Slim Chance Back Door Band" (studio cats) Kid Andersen - guitar, keyboards, background vocals, strings; Marc Baum - Bari, tenor, alto saxes and flute; Terry Hanck - tenor sax and; Jon Otis - percussion and background vocals. The total package is a fat, solid, "original but familiar" sound absent from most of the current acts of today.
When asked about the genres that they cover, they defer to Duke Ellington's response to the question (paraphrased); "There's only two kinds of music: good music and bad music. I play good music.". So, after becoming weary of answering; "Well, we play R&B, New Orleans Funk, Jazz, Blues, R&R, Rockabllly, etc.": in a conversation with musician friends about the dilemma of coming up with a concise answer to the "genre" question we decided upon assigning our genre-bending style its own genre name. Wayne and guitarist Rick "Guitar Whitey" McCracken named their genre "Nouveau Retro-Relevant" or "NRR"!
if background music is what you're looking for: "Slim Chance Blues & Rhythm Revue" is wrong for your event. They command your attention and impose involuntary participation from your feet. They massage the tempos and rhythms; and captivate your attention through showmanship and patter. Expressed best in one of their original songs "Red Beans", they advise; "We don't do it with volume and we don't do it with amps. Because (our music) the blues is a feeling not just a sound...and we want you to dig what we're putting down". If a good time is your intent, rest assured , when "Slim Chance B&RR" is around you will snap your fingers, pat your feet and even let out an occasional "hallelujah" before they're through.
